David Horton is alarmed by the ABC’s relentless march to the Right and has written the following open letter to managing director Mark Scott demanding answers.
Dear Mark Scott,
About this “balance” thing…
I thought the ABC was about presenting good and accurate information. Your view seems to be that if you have someone telling the truth, it must be balanced by a lie; a fact balanced by an opinion; history balanced by rewritten history; science balanced by ignorance or religion; objective data balanced by vested interest; conservative opinion balanced by neoconservative opinion.
The IPA is infesting every ABC outlet with its Libertarian Free Market ideology in the service of secret Business business. What are they providing “balance” for? Have there been Marxist economists daily on the ABC I have somehow missed? Even Keynesian economists? Er…no. Professor Sloan is on every week instead. Who is she “balancing”?
What about the appearance of Peter Reith every week? A full essay on The Drum plus other live appearances. Who is he balancing? Gerard Henderson, Piers Akerman, Nikki Sava? Has there been a rash of appearances by Trotskyists, Socialist Alliance, Left Wing unionists who have escaped my notice?
Do you really not see that the occasional appearance of, say, a Green MP, or someone from The Australia Institute, doesn’t actually match in weight the regular appearance of those mentioned above, so regular they might as well be on staff, and certainly gain the apparent credibility of being so.
On a number of occasions, you have run factual pieces or reports on climate change science and its findings. Are these “balanced” by the climate change denier opinion pieces you run, do you think, from those like the IPA who are both ideologically driven and represent vested interests?
Where do you in fact draw the line on “balance”? Would an astronomy program on the age of the universe and the Earth have to be balanced by an opinion piece from a Young Earth Creationist? If not, why not? There are small groups of nutters who believe the Earth is Flat, the Moon landings were fakes, the twin towers were demolished by the CIA. Do these people get to report on their beliefs on the ABC, gain credibility from its imprimatur? Why not?
Of course the ABC should be a place where political opinions can be debated. They aren’t on commercial networks or in print these days. The ABC should welcome and encourage differences of opinion on the future of the health system, how best to respond to global warming, the structure of the economy, the education system and its funding, environmental problems, and so on. There are two or more strands of thoughts on all of these, and people are entitled to hold them, express them, and have them represented on the national broadcaster. What they are not entitled to is their own facts. Venues such as Q&A and The Drum are ideal for such debates between protagonists with the leavening of actual experts in the fields concerned.
But this isn’t what is happening. On the ABC of 2012, facts are fungible. One of the ensconced culture warriors can simply declare something to be the case or not the case, and, “he said, she said”, that belief carries as much weight as the results of fifty years research work by a Nobel Laureate, or as much as the views of 100 per cent of the relevant academic association. In fact, more weight ― because not only are the ideologue and the researcher each just occupying one chair, but the chair the ABC regular ideologue occupies is much more weighty by virtue of being constantly occupied. The IPA chap, for example, feels at home, and is mates with, the ABC coordinator, has been seen by the viewers over and over again in that place. Is, in short, an authority figure ― an authority vested in him (or her) by the ABC.
As it is in those News Ltd columnists, former Lib ministers, right wing economists. None of them have, or speak about, an area of expertise. All of them are simply given a platform to blast the government in opinionated diatribes whose purported “facts” remain unchallenged by the comperes of your current affairs shows.
How on earth does this procession “balance” anything? And how has it come, by stealth, to be part of an ABC that was mercifully free of such crap up until a few years ago? Once the ABC presented facts you could rely on, now current affairs is a fact-free zone.
Speaking of comperes, how has it come to be that essentially all of your comperes, reporters, script and news writers, appear to be, how shall we say, leaning towards the Right? Prior to Kerry O’Brien being shunted sideways out of the action I had no idea what, if any, political leanings ABC staff had. Whether Kerry was left wing I don’t know, but he angered conservatives by trying to deal in facts. The others also carefully presented neutral faces and voices to the world.
Since his departure, there is no doubt at all about the political preference of reporters and presenters (with a few exceptions). And they are quite willing to make it obvious in a way that wouldn’t have been tolerated even five years ago. Sarcastic and snide comments about PM and ministers; ensuring the dilution of good news for government; constant use of “Tony Abbott says” to lead stories; other Libs used, quite inappropriately, to comment on Labor politics; the constant return to “Rudd Challenge” stories when the government is doing well; the overplaying of poor opinion polls for the government and the downplaying of good ones; the lack of fact-checking of anything the Opposition says; the hunting with the pack, or leading it on stories apparently negative for the government (such as Thomson and Slipper); the lack of later follow-up to correct them; the refusal to follow stories negative to the Opposition; the constant use of News Ltd stories, unchecked, to lead news bulletins or provide topics for current affairs shows; the soft, ever-so-helpful interviews of shadow ministers (the recent Leigh Sales interview of Tony Abbott was a welcome, shocking, change, but remains unique), the barrage of repetitive questions, talking over the answers, in interviews of ministers. This perfect storm of anti-government reporting is quite unique for the ABC, with governments of both sides of politics, in my 60 years of watching and listening. How does it provide “balance”?
Look, I know that there are News Ltd columnists (not least the ones who have a constant platform on the ABC these days), shock jocks, and the odd Liberal Senator, who rant and rave about how “left-wing” the ABC is, and how this must be corrected, or, as your friends the IPA demand, the Corporation sold off. For these people, of course, the ABC either shouldn’t exist at all or, if it does, it should be the broadcast arm of Menzies House. To these people, the ABC can never be far enough to the Right, and they remain oblivious to the systematic rightward drift of recent years. Their “complaints” are not evidence that you have “got the balance right”, but evidence that you haven’t. They are trying to pull the ABC all the way over into Abetz Land, I would like to pull it back to the middle.
I wish myself luck.
Yours,
David Horton

Is our Auntie unbalanced? RT @independentaus: Open letter to ABC managing director Mark Scott http://t.co/ng2gtcdt
RT @independentaus: @Watermelon_Man asks #ABC managing director Mark Scott – WTF is going on with #yourABC? http://t.co/xhRo8FlE
Yeah, good luck with this. Scott was a Howard appointee…. He knows exactly what he is doing.
Can you please add my name to this letter David? The utter crap, the bias, the trotting out of turdoch hacks, the aforementioned”the leader of the opposition”, the shadow minister for bullshit” etc that starts every bloody news announcement, and mind you I am coming from listening to the wireless in a rural area where the bias is so profound that we all refer to abc se as the liebral station.
The bombardment is relentless, but never balanced. Then I turn on the telly to get more of the same. Mind you, if any news that would be deemed to be damaging to abbott is running through the internet we never hear about it.
Mark Scott is a product of the tory right, the sad thing is that Rudd had an opportunity to get rid of this total drop kick and squibbed it.
Dont be surprised if there is no response……
I hope Mark Scott and his producers/managers read this. I can’t believe how our public broadcaster is subtly pursuing a tabloid, Tory agenda.
I wrote this piece a little while ago:
http://www.independentaustralia.net/2012/business/media-2/the-captive-abc-and-the-tyranny-of-balance/
Hear hear! and an extra Hear hear! for emphasis. You can add my name to the letter as well. I honestly thought I was alone in thinking things had gone downhill since Kerry O’Brien was shifted. Nowadays I’m lucky to make it through the entire program, whether it is 7:30, Lateline, The Drum, Insiders. And as for News 24! I’m sick of the comperes and their snide comments. I want real experts in their field. I don’t want to listen to journalists’ opinions, or journalists interviewing journalists. I don’t want bias by omission. I don’t want 1/2 a dozen news items regurgitated for an entire day. What about the rest of the news? I don’t want Murdoch’s version of the news, or the IPA’s. I shouldn’t have to visit lots of web sites or trusted (by me) blogs in an attempt to garner the truth of a story.
The rags that are called newspapers and the commercial TV stations are in big trouble and the ABC is blindly following their lead. Wise? No! Just bloody stupid.
The kindly auntie is turning into the no-good uncle.
I’m sure Mr Scott will welcome the opportunity to answer community concerns about the ABC.

Well said. Thank you.
Prior to 2008, government MPs just lauding the government were never run as ABC News items. Nor were opposition MPs bagging the government.
Both were regarded as purely political posturing with no news value whatsoever.
Since 2008, we have not seen government MPs just lauding the government as news items. But plenty of instances of opposition MPs just bagging the government.
Here is one example:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-08-06/abbott-accuses-govt-of-trying-to-muzzle-free-speech/4179798
News value?
Balance?
And why no attempt to challenge the several blatant lies in this spiel?
Damned right! The right-wing liars are given the stage ahead of the facts too much of the time. Amazing. Peter Reith, the IPA treated like they are bi-partisan commentators telling absolute truths.
‘He said, she saids’ given air time over facts. Following the tabloids down the anti-Labor government track.
Come on ABC. Where have your standards gone? How do we get them back?
Correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t the ABC bound by legislation to present balanced content ???
No balance at all when it comes to reporting the Middle East – it could all be coming straight from Washington.
What a great letter. I’d like to support it.
Something has to be done about Mark Scott. Since his appointment by Howard the right have had a field day. Only on rare occasions, like the Leigh Sales interview with Abbott, do we ever see the same level of scrutiny of the Opposition. It has become a propaganda machine for the right and invariably takes its cue for issues from the Murdoch press. The weekly appearances of the IPA, Peter Reith, Amanda Vanstone, and many others associated with the far right has no comparison. Every political program for the most part has a conservative representative, not so for the progressives. Today was a classical example on the DRUM. Reps. were a former Liberal adviser, an author and person from 2UE. I’m sick of it and its time we put a stop to Scotts agenda!
@ABCthedrum read this ya smug n silly tools-ABC's gone to the (think-tank/Lib-hack) dogs & tick-tock @MarkScott
http://t.co/hohiNaJK #auspol
“– it could all be coming straight from Washington.” or Tel Aviv.
Has anybody heard of Palestine and the Palestinians? Balance at the ABC disappeared when Mark Scott left Fairfax and came to “our” ABC.
Since then, Fairfax and the ABC have run along parallel paths.
The Drum and News 24 have been unwatchable almost since they hit the air waves and these days there is very little in current affairs that is credible in any way.
Also at the ABC – but not on television – Classic FM has become more and more the station of religious music – has this been forced on them by Mark Scott as well?
Conclusion? Thank goodness one has CDs and DVDs to fill the gap left by what used to be quite a credible organisation.

ABC = Anthony’s bullshit and crap
Most of this is spot on. Does anyone know when Mark Scott’s term ends? The government must be aware of the ABC’s very noticeable shift to the right of the spectrum under Scott. I believe Keith Windscuttle’s term expires soon and he will not be missed!
Hi all,
I agree with much of the letter and the comments. Exposing the bias of Scott and writing Open Letters is one thing but really Scott needs to be replaced if this trend is to be halted. Can I ask you all to devote your energies to suggest ways of achieving that? The most obvious justification would be that he is not adhering to the ABC’s charter. Such observations need to be communicated to the Government of the day and the ABC Board – and made public. When is his contract running out? He was initially a Howard appointment.
ABSOLUTELY BLOODY RIGHT IN EVERY RESPECT!!!!
It has become increasingly apparent that the ABC has lost any semblance of balance and has an agenda of destroying this current government. It is an utter disgrace under Scott. No wonder Howard appointed him. The ABC used to have class. No more
I fully agree with you. Hope your open letter will make a difference. Please add my name to it.
Just waiting for the moment of truth when Cedric Abetz takes the chair at the ABC.
Please add me in support of this letter to the ABC.
The Drum is very appropriately named. It is the constant drumbeat of right-wing propaganda. At the risk of doing a Godwin’s, Hitler or Mussolini would have been proud of the ABC.
It’s time for some vigilanteism. We need a permanent protest outside the ABC. #OccupyABC.
Great letter David, needs to be said (repeatedly!). Add my name by all means.
My Dad & I have both written to the ABC in recent times, most recently from him regarding the disgraceful display on Q&A with Kate Ellis, Lindsay Tanner, Piers Akerman (oh yeah, and that shrill little dog-whistle-of-a-man Christopher Pyne) by the men and Tony Jones not moderating better. The lurch to the right has been quick and relentlessly unopposed, so let’s hope it’s not too late to jibe left back to the centre again.
Sadly though I doubt Mark Scott will read it, and even if he does, it’ll instantly flag ‘left wing bias’ in his right wing biased brain. The man needs to go.
Such a shame, it really has lost all credibility. I used to watch every night and Sunday mornings, but just getting harder and harder to not vomit all over my sofa.
red-jos – you added ‘or Tel Aviv’ to my comment that the ABC’s Middle East reporting ‘could all be coming straight from Washington.’ My original intention was to put ‘Washington or Tel Aviv’ but decided against because my experience on other news sites is that any mention of a certain country attracts a determined one-eyed bunch of posters who deflect or ruin any rational discussion. I guess my reluctance suggests that they are winning so good on you for adding it, and I won’t be so cowardly next time.
Excellent letter – please add my name.
The ABC are now just blatantly biased. I have tried complaining, and have been made to feel that I’m delusional. According to them I just imagine hearing so often “The opposition says…” beginning news items, and before Government policy announcements etc., and I just ‘thought’ I saw Kate Ellis being bullied on Q&A.
Please add my name too.
Several weeks ago I sent an email to ABC complaining about their
programmes. It was acknowledged, that it was being passed on to the appropriate department???
The new complaint I have now is Carina on News 24 Breakfast.
She just can’t wait to attack the Labor Party, it is so obvious.
The road to a new form of ‘soft’ fascism has been underway for sometime and that includes neutering many voices and most certainly, government funded outlets like the ABC.
The shadowy IPA also advise Tony Abbott, a fact never mentioned when it’s opinion pieces are run. Oh they might be ‘on leave’ from the IPA but the lack of disclosure is a disgrace.
We have seen Mitt Romney proclaim he will strangle Public Access TV in the USA and the BBC in Britain is under attack in full scale war from tabloids and powerful media barons because of some weirdo DJ named Jimmy Savile whilst not a peep has been heard about how the very same tabloids like Rupert Murdoch’s The Sun and News of The World weekly promoted Mr Savile on a weekly basis.
Privately owned media can do no wrong (both Leveson & Finklestein have not put a dent in News Corp’s profits) and public funded media must be destroyed in this coming digital age.
Once we would have seen the ABC do great investigations into a subject currently of importance in NSW, the manner in which Packer has been handed another prize uncontested in a way which Stephen Mayne (a sole voice) correctly describes as “Russian oligarch” style.
Flick between the mindless Channel Ten news and ABC news and there is little difference.
For months now I also have been calling to some action to occur regarding the ABC and their right wing leanings.
My husband and I used to love the ABC because they used to have great programming but nowadays they just have repeat after repeat with so called ‘new’ programs which are still repeats. There is no balanced opinions anymore and it is an utter disgrace.
David your article rings so true to many of us and I also am willing for my name to be added as well.
And they endlessly call the arrival of refugees a border protection policy and hate being questioned about their deranged language.
When and how can he be replaced?
if and when he gets replaced, does it HAVE to be another white old stiffshirt? jonathon green would be an excellent boss imo, he seems to be one of the few that can see the challenges. and for a media company, that would be a good thing. i don’t believe he’s ever been part of any party (could be wrong), but he talks basic common sense, so no doubt would be dubbed a leftie.
David Selmes – the ABC is required to respond to every complaint. of course, I wouldn’t put much faith in David Horton getting any satisfaction from that response.
Sales seems to have pulled her head in since that run in with Rabbott. I wonder if Scott has had a word to her, or slapped her wrist?
I like Silkworm’s suggestion: OccupyABC Will someone tell Getup?
Another addition to your list. I live in Country NSW and used to listen to the RN news. No longer!
I contacted the ABC on numerous occasions with a very simple request. Since the ABC evidently finds it extremely difficult to provide a “balanced” factual and professional NEWS service on Radio National I asked if it would at least be possible as a first step to desist from letting ANYONE voice OPINIONS, GOSSIP and SPIN during the NEWS segment. In other words ABC newsreader and ABC reporters only. Nobody else! Even the mindless he said / she said comments by ABC staff would be easier to ignore. Whilst focusing on valid NEWS items skipping or screening out the usual disinformation (read bullsh*t)so aptly referred to in this article is then not quite as painful.
GetUp is certainly one way to approach the matter, and Care2 petitions and other petition sites such as change.org.
When their wretched opening items start such as for the 7pm TV news, we are all so moronic that they have to say: “ABC1, ABC1, ABC1″ as if we wouldn’t understand what was due next!!! I started a care2 petition about adverts on SBS a few months ago and didn’t get too many signatures, but the ABC is the “national” broadcaster (or should that be nationalist??) and so maybe there will be 100s more people prepared to sign.
Profecto – thanks for your note. There is just too much blotting out of contemporary events from ABC and other news bulletins for one to ignore – it reminds me too much of my life in apartheid South Africa, where we didn’t even get TV until 1975, and even then it was very tightly controlled by the government. The outside world events were censored or unknown – fortunately we could still get overseas radio!
Mark Scott could well be an arm of the Murdoch empire instead of ex-Fairfax and currently ABC and we really do need dramatic changes.
As MarilynS (I think it was) said earlier, what was done to Mary Kostakidis was an act of bastardry almost unknown before Shawn Brown and his misogyny arrived at SBS – and is anyone better at the ABC? As has already been said the episode with Tony Jones just shows haw low they have all sunk!
Mannie De Saxe (red-jos)
We've struck a chord. Thursday's open letter to the ABC's Mark Scott has been viewed 1,000s of times. http://t.co/f2RaonEN
David the “balance” is provided by the stupidity of the ALP in denying that there is a problem at the ABC.
Of course the stupidity is enhanced by ABC staff and management cheering on a Liberal Party victory when an Abbott government intends to slash ABC funding.
Excellent letter David.
Quixotic waste of time sending it to Mark Scott though. The leopard isn’t going to read it and then change his spots overnight.
I think you may be better off sending to Stephen Conroy or his department. This is best done via the local branch of the ALP. Even if you’re not a member of the ALP you can go to a branch meeting as a guest.
In fact, as I *am* a member of the ALP, would you actually mind if I “plagiarized” your letter – with attribution of authorship to you if like – and attempted to bring up the matter at our next branch meeting?
all the best

I thought I was alone with my growing contempt for ABC reporting and news (views!). I would gladly sign any petition to get rid of Scott and review the Charter. I have been referring to ABC radio and television as the BBJJJ, not much for the growing number of 50 years plus Australians anymore.
Conroy is a bit of a whimp but he may be a place to start.
More dumbing down of Australia, sad.
