Why did the mainstream media only report on the Prime Minister’s new look at the Press Club last week, asks Denise Allen.
WHEN PRIME MINISTER Julia Gillard fronted up to the National Press Club last Wednesday sporting a trendy new pair of hipster glasses, instead of her usual contact lens, the mainstream media had a conniption.
Supposed professional journalists were taken aback by her “new look” to the point where they all but said — “how dare she this without consulting us first!”
So, as usual, they wrote endless silly stories about the Prime Ministers “new look” saying she copied her glasses from Hillary Clinton, how she “stunned the nation”, “became a media sensation”, “caused a stir” and fashionistas lined up to comment.
Whilst they beavered away, with that little inconsequential piece of trivia, the Prime Minister went on to deliver an excellent speech about the Government’s plans for the nation.
The Prime Minister has come a long in the past four years.
Julia Gillard has grown into the role as leader of our nation with grace, humility and a strength of will that I believe not many people thought she had in her.
As our first female Prime Minister, she has endured a barrage of criticism — including once from yours truly, but now, all I see is one highly intelligent, strong, determined refined woman.
When she holds a press conference, she is not only very poised and confident, she is on top of every issue. She has stood strong and had absolutely no qualms about standing in front of the jackals from mainstream media and answering every single question they fired at her.
The way she has conducted herself amid the tantrums and abuse from the Opposition and mainstream media is to be commended and applauded.
Which brings me to the Opposition.
Tony Abbott fronted up to the National Press Club two days after the Prime Minister on Friday 1 February.
Amazing, I know, but not one mainstream media journalist commented on his “new look”.
Having worked in the fashion and beauty industry for many years, I am only too well aware when someone has had a makeover. For 20+ years, I used to teach young women and men body image, life skills and how to improve their presentation for employment: makeup, hair, clothing, etiquette and speech. I know the tricks of the trade of makeup to highlight eyes, cheekbones, and so on.
Why no mainstream journalist, those very same ones who salivated over the Prime Ministers new glasses, didn’t then write about Abbott’s makeover is beyond me.
Because it was so obvious — you didn’t need to be expert to “spot the difference”.
Surely they could notice the change — the smooth polished wrinkle free finish to his face, particularly his forehead; the “tanned” look to his face; the white eye shadow used to “highlight” his eyes; the strange makeup addition to his lips (must be a new product!); the new slight, but noticeable, “extra fullness” to his hair.
Now, I am not saying there is anything wrong with this.
I tried botox myself, once, six years ago and knowing how to apply makeup correctly is second nature to me having been in the business — but I do believe Abbott’s new smooth buffed look has been a tad overdone.
But what I am more curious about is why mainstream media frothed in endless dismay about the Prime Ministers glasses and wrote silly stories about it, but totally ignored the fact that, somehow, Abbott had miraculously overnight had lost his “craggy” looks, grew more hair on top of head and looked slightly orange.
Why he felt the need to go as far as he did is very odd.
It was very Silvio Berlusconi:
Whoever is advising him, a little bit of counsel — it didn’t work.

So you can polish a turd?
F*wit
Looks like he’s just come off the set of Thunderbirds.
Gaffer tape on the ears might work, and Margies shirt ironing skills have certainly improved.
Good article.
It is very Silvio Berlusconi.
It makes me think though of tidying and painting the dead to look nice for a viewing.
Denise, I agree with your summation of PMJG and the way that she has grown into the job, and I wrote about it in my poem “Leadership LNP Vs ALP”.
Abbotts makeover just makes him look more like the close plastic facsimile of a human being, that we already know that he is.
Tungstenator, Nice one
If you polish a turd
it can come up quite well
But you’ll never get rid of
The intrinsic bad smell
Lightningfrog, exactly
Cheers
He’s almost even learnt how to tie a tie.
what a hoot.
“… Looks like he’s just come off the set of Thunderbirds …”
SeaViews! I resent that comment!
The set of Thunderbirds may have been inhabited by wood puppets in a world of make-believe (okay, that IS like Toeknee and the LNP so far…) – but at least Scott, Virgil and Gordon all had personal integrity and they acted for the common good.
Just made a fool of himself walk on to a building site like that with your bad tan with white eye lids and lips
Brer Rabbotts’s nickname would have to be “two dicks” You cant get that stupid playing with only one
So Why no fuss in the MSM.
The PM gets glasses (i am sure every Australian knows by now)
THe LOTO get a creepy makeover: not mentioned?
Tungstenator, You can’t polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter and call it a Faberge Dog’s Egg.
Abbott now looks a crazy as he is.
You silly people, don’t you know he got that tan rescuing dozens of poor souls on our beaches! Also his singed/trimmed eyebrows are a result of his mighty efforts bringing all those bush fires under control. What a guy. lol.
Here’s a thought.
Abbott gets the once over with cosmetics, perhaps an Ashley Martin transplant and some Smoochy-Pooch lip gloss with the high expectation of him being in demand for tele-visuals post Thomson’s arrest?
As I say, ’tis just a thought.
Dr Dog.
I ran your suggestion past my two Border Collies and they take offence that their excretia can possibly be compared to Abbott. In actual fact, even the excretia was highly offended. Just ‘tween you and I, your comparison is very apt indeed.
Love Faberge Dog’s Egg Image. How apt.
Oh puh-lease, this was just blatant pandering to the powerful Oompa-Loompa lobby…
Thanks for the therapy Denise…some stomach cramping hilarity there + in the comments. Can’t you just see the devil horns protruding from Burlosconi’s bad head and also from the before shot of before & after Tony makeover? Reminds me too of those really creepy US soap stars…Days of our Lives/Lies? It probably took about six coats each buffed & dried to achieve that faux angelic prime ministerial/puppet doll gloss. He’s going to have to work on that smirking/swallowing-the-canary “smile” though? Maybe time for some botox/surgery? And gloss over is what the MSM did…don’t want to draw any attention to accusations of artificality/pimping for the role? Let’s just focus on Gillard’s “funny” glasses.
Looks like Mr Abbott has hired the crew from Mme Tussaud’s in London. They are, no doubt, used to working on a stuffed dummy.
PamK, stuffed in every sense of the word
Cheers
Great article. And for once I’m glad I read the comments.
Where are the headquarters for this “Oompa-Loompa lobby”. I have information that could change the destiny of Oompa Loompas and give them hope, reward and opportunity.
Tungstenator, please advise your Border Collies that as a medical canine I can assure them that the quality of the egg is based on the quality of their diet.
I can’t imagine they could produce ‘an Abbott’ unless you have been feeding them fish heads and blue cheese these past three months.
If this trend goes through to all of the LNP, there is going to be an acute shortage on the market for Cold Cream and Foundation till the election. Buy up now before it is all gone.
Is this the ‘real tony’ or has he borrowed prissy pyne’s make up kit?
Had exact same thoughts, just wondered how he managed to fit it all in between truck driving, fire fighting etc.
And not just a subtle makeover either, Press Council address looked like he’d been cooked in a solarium,
The bias continues.
And yes totally agree Denise on how the PM has grown into the job. At first was concerned with her public speaking , but what an evolution. How she is familiar with every subject is commendable.
Arrggh and Uhhs do my head in with the other unreported makeover. And not much mention of Hockey either.
Just watched Question Time on tv.
Gillard really does wipe the floor with Abbott.
Pity she couldn’t get the same message out in MSM
Exactly Denise!
The explanation is simple though, the MSM/ABC are as ever merely operating as Abbott’s propaganda unit.
Classic from Tungstenator & another staring role from Dr Dog!
I agree it is a Silvio Berlusconi style makeover on Abbott & very apt really.
Berlusconi is a liar, fraud, misogynist, policy free incompetent representing the elites & fascist too.
No amount of builders bog or tan paint & hairpieces will ever change the fact Abbott is the ultimate in FAIL!
Hi all! Just want to say thank you all so much for your comments…some made me laugh some made go “Oh!” but all them I know were posted because you are as passionate about getting the truth out there as I am. I hope I made your day, made you smile and made you appreciate IA even more because something like this – nor any of the articles you read here on IA – would ever have been covered on MSM. Thanks again 1k+ FB shares is awesome!

Dr Dog.
I am a good dog owner. As such, when trying to replicate the Hero of the Half Arsed, Mr Tony Abbott, I give my beloved dawgs no less than 2 takeaway containers each of Singh Histhingz Vindaloo Dog Curry – guaranteed to make you dog jump for joy.
I must say the results are surprisingly like the object of this thread. Buy some TODAY!
Denise.
It is because of people like you that make us come back to IA again and again. It is comforting to know that there are scribes out there who are switched on to the biases that purport to be ‘factual news outlets’.
So long as we have IA and contributors like yourself, we know that the BS that currently masquerades as ‘news’ will be relegated to the rubbish bin whence it came.
What bothers me about Tony Abbott is that someone came along and said ‘ Hey Tony – a bit of botox, a better comb over, get the action man tan up which will highlight super-whitened teeth and you’ll look great’ and he accepted such advice or maybe he decided to do this all by himself which makes his judgement even worse.
The ha-ha-ha, the costume changing, the bragging of ‘healthy self-esteem’ as he head kicks anyone in his way whether inside or outside politics and takes the high moral ground.
No leadership quality here. Never was, never will be. His unpopularity is such he may even lose his seat. Time for a change and not just because of an orange tan.
And today, the PM made him look even dumber during Question Time… as per usual.
So Julia Gillard is looking lovely is she.I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I’m one of the one hundred thousand single parents who got moved to Newstart between chistmas and New Year. I have 3 children in my care and have worked as a Registered Nurse, permanent part time for years. I have always fulfilled my requirment of working at least 30 hours a fortnight, and of course always reported my income. Before christmas I received a part pension of $183 a fortnight. Since I’m on newstart, doing the same job, and working the same hours, I now receive $53. So not only has the labour party disadvantaged unemployed single parents, they have obviously fiddled with the amounts you can earn so they can screw working single parents as well. Apparently my 3 children and I are worth $130 less to society now than we were before christmas.
But isn’t Julia looking lovely…
What I haven’t seen reported is that at the same time the govt made the cuts mentioned above, the also made cuts to rent assistance. Apparently if you make a hundred thousand financially vunerable people poorer and threaten their accomodation you will get them to look for more work. Arn’t you overwelmed by the humanity of it all.
And isn’t Julia conducting herself with such poise and grace…
At the exact same time, they implimented these cuts between christmas and new year, they handed out the back to school payments. so if single parents were not watching carefully (and who is just before new year)they would have thought the labour party just did them a favour. This is the real Labour party. This is the contempt with which they hold low income earners, make them
poorer, but cynically wave some cash in front of their eyes while you do it.
Julia’s political skills have come a long way…
In the New Year, after this rotten piece of public policy had been quiety efficiently and cynically implemented, Julia annouces the election date. Whats the bet the money saved from this policy will be redistributed to wealthier, more deserving Australians so the Labour party can be re-elected.
Yes Julia is glowing with a new confidence…
If Tony Abbott and his Liberal party thugs were in power, and pulled exactly the same stunt over christmas, IA would be outraged, and commenters would be livid…
But Julia Gillard is just looking so lovely… Isn’t she?
Hiedfug,
I think Julia the PM just gets lovlier every day and doing a great job with her Party for this Country.
This is what I have to say and you won’t like it. Did Julia the PM ask you to have three kids and be single? Don’t know if you are a single parent because of terrible circumstances. There are so many single women out there and have kids to get all the freebies from Government because of Howards Baby Bonus. If you had a partner and split, well that’s not the fault of the Government either. Everyone wants a handout and why should the Taxpaper have to provide for you.
Hiedfug … I too raised three children by myself since 1980 when there was very little support for sole parents. During the early ’80′s I was an activist for sole parents and I ran an active campaign through radio and TV to get fathers wages garnisheed…and succeeded. I worked three part -time jobs and was often at breaking point and ‘crying’ tired. When I left my former husband in 1980, I had three children under 5, no money, no furniture, no car, just the suitcases I took me…and there was very little support for SP in communities and society as a whole. But I retrained, open small businesses with the help of my parents (who were not rich people). It was bloody hard work. There was no schools kids bonus. My children are now 38, 35, and 33 and all are successful. My 33yo son, after suffering a serious workplace accident last year, is going to Uni to retrain this year to study economics & politics. I am extremely proud of all them.
I also went on to be a Member of Parliament so that I could fight for people like you.
I completely understand what sole parents are going through it is why I wrote this:
http://www.independentaustralia.net/2012/politics/bashing-single-parents-is-bad-policy
…and if you say “we would be outraged if Abbott did this”….We were in 2006 when the Howard Govt first introduced this regressive policy and of which Abbott was a Minister in that Government…and voted for!
But although I vehemently disagree with this this SP policy, I thoroughly support 99% of all other policies that this Govt has introduced.
Denise
PS:Although I didnt say the Prime Minister is “looking lovely” thank you for raising it because now that you mention it… I think she is.
Yes Julia looks healthy, strong and focussed and leadership material. I have always liked and supported our Prime Minister even when she has had to make hard decisions.
Hiedfug has gone off topic and I understand the Newstart changes have caused grief but our current government has emphasised education-education-education as well as jobs. When the carbon price was put into place lower income earners, pensioners etc received relative compensation, there is also a substantial back to school bonus, a paid parental leave has been established and the government wants to introduce the NDIS and Gonski educational reforms. Many people support these reforms knowing they will not reap the benefit but future generations will. There is so much work to be done and not everyone can be covered in these volatile times. Also changes can always be tweaked and I’m sure this government watches closely how their policies affect all people and will adjust accordingly when money allows.
Phoney looks like Gumby with hair.
A very well written & greatly needed article, Denise. It is a pity the Mainstream Media is so sadly remiss in their reporting. Many thanks to you & IA for providing us with decent journalism.
Apropos to heidfug’s off topic vent. Many of us have had to bring up & provide for our children on our own without any government benefits. My mother did it with five very young children, when society frowned on such situations making it very hard for her, & I did with three children. Wasn’t easy but it was something we just did. Heidfug has the benefit of being a RN & can increase her/his hours easily. There was no mention of child support payments either nor how old the youngest child is. Blaming a particular person i.e. Julia Gillard for her/his predicament is foolish especially when the alternative will be much worse. This does seem to be part of the “middle class welfare” entitlement mindset fostered by John Howard.
Abbott’s first photo is his real reptillian face. The second one is his plastic mask for the media.
I think he used the same spray tan as Hot Air Hockey. They both have shiney orange faces now.
Heidfug; There are also many married women out there who keep churning out the kids ‘to get all the freebies from Government because of Howards Baby Bonus’ and all the other extras just for breeding.
