From his ever-changing small business pulpit, the Petulant Priest expounds incessantly about the end of the world, but how much credibility does he have? According to Denise Allen, absolutely none.
What is it that makes people believe Tony Abbott? For some strange inexplicable reason, it never seems to occur to people that he may well be, well, lying to you — just to get your vote.
For over 18 months now, Abbott has been rampaging around the nation like a door-to-door snake-oil salesman — dropping in on every single manufacturing business he thinks will let him in the door and give him a platform for his manipulative and calculating Chinese whispers.
Of course, many do believe him as he bleats endlessly about his cynically concocted scare-mongering version of Armageddon. Hellfire and damnation, preaches Tony!
‘Oh verily, this evil carbon tax – brought in by that lying, evil, satanic witch – will tear the sky asunder and make it fall in upon your heads … and the world as we know it will end on July 1. Repent all ye sinners! The end is nigh! Doom, doom, DOOM!’
For over 18 tedious months, Abbott has ranted and railed against the Government’s carbon tax — a pricing method, let’s not forget, that he said himself was “the best way to price carbon”.
Now, of course, he conveniently forgets that he was once the great purveyor and an ardent supporter of that which he so vehemently condemns.
Quite frankly, the Abbott has no shame. He brazenly stands on his pulpit, day after day, telling twisted, scheming, lies – like a modern Rasputin (or maybe an “obstructionist Capuchin”, in the words of an immortal) – as if he alone has always been the most righteous, honest, moralistic, ethical person that ever was — who can do and say no wrong. In actual fact, The Priestly Man is a blatant liar — and most certainly a fraud.
He slithers around the countryside like the black plague, infecting the minds of the people – willingly, in some unaccountable cases – with his toxic bag of lies and drivel — obviously rendering them all but incapable of thinking for themselves because with monotonous regularity they all robotically parrot his lying rhetoric. It would never occur to them to check the facts for themselves. The Abbott is the great pretender, claiming to be the almighty saviour of the world…
“Vote for me…I’ll save you!”
….From what?
From the gospel truth, maybe?
Or from a price on pollution, to reduce emissions by 5 per cent — the exact same target he and his clueless colleagues have themselves agreed to?
From a price that Treasury and (so far) three State Governments have proved will have minimal effect on the cost of some goods and services — and for which millions will be compensated for?
Oh, but Cardinal Abbott and his team think they have a much better plan — a plan that includes, among other things, planting 20 million trees, though they haven’t said where. And they also haven’t said who; maybe the some of the public servants they plan to sack and put into a forced Work for the Dole program? And how much will it cost? Well…according to their CC policy on their website its only going to cost them $5 per tree! Yes, a forced labour work for the dole program it is — just like the UK Tories utilised during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
They are also going to pay the biggest polluters billions – out of consolidated revenue – not to pollute! Isn’t that like blackmail? That’s giving our money to rich people so they don’t mess up our environment. Anyway, at the end of the day, we will be paying the price — which according to Treasury estimates, will be in the vicinity of $1,400 per year out of your pocket. And remember — no compensation!
On the other hand, Labor’s policy of making the big polluter pay a price for the pollution they create and they spew into the atmosphere – and then using that money to compensate you for the very minor increase in prices – will actually make millions of middle to low income Australians better off.
So, having a carbon tax will make ordinary people better off — yet the Abbott’s policy will make everyone worse off!
This is what I don’t get — why do gullible people believe him? Where is the sense in that?
And if (and it is a pretty big if, regardless of what the mainstream media cheer squads might tell you) Abbott is ever made PM — he is going to rip all that compensation, all those tax breaks – including the raising of the tax-free threshold from $6,000 to $18,000 – away and give the money to the big polluters.
Not only that, he also intends to give Australian women the worlds most expensive paid maternity leave. That will be, get this folks — A GREAT BIG NEW TAX on business, making $5 million in taxable profits; a $2.7billion tax!
So, for all the single people and DINKs out there who are constantly complaining about “missing out on a hand out”, you along with every other working Australian will be paying, by way of increased, prices — for wealthy women to have babies.
So, what do we have so far?
Firstly, all compensation ripped away from you — your hard earnt tax dollars going in a great big handout to big polluters to not pollute
Secondly, businesses being slugged with a GREAT BIG NEW TAX that will force them to increase prices just so wealthy women will be paid well for having a baby. Yup, stuff the poor little working woman on $30,000 to 40,000 a year, because the Great Big New Tax on business will also pay for the paid maternity leave but on a much lower scale — whereas Labor’s policy is fair and equitable and every new mother gets the same, no matter what their pay scale.
So, according to Abbott, it’s ok to pay big polluters your taxes not to pollute and put a GBNT on business to pay women to have babies — but it’s not ok to tax to big polluters for poisoning our planet?
Oh — and he is going to cancel the mining tax that will allow the Australian people to share in the multi billions of dollars the industry generates out of the resources that belong to all Australians; wealth beyond anyone’s wildest dreams, except of course the likes of Gina, Clive and to a lesser extent Twiggy. So take all that out of your weekly income, benefits and super, everyone — that’s fair.
Mark my words, Abbott will put up the GST if he ever get to be PM — because it will be the only way he could possibly make up for his huge $70 billion black hole.
Do people believe The Monk because they simply don’t like the Prime Minister? Or is it that they have believed the rampant scaremongering of the nation’s commercial shock jocks – some of whom have the credibility of a slug – when they spew their venom about the PM “lying”, when in actual fact she simply compromised due to being faced with a minority Government; something Abbott himself would have done had the Independents given him the nod — and they didn’t because they didn’t trust him, didn’t believe he would be a good negotiator and certainly didn’t believe he would be a good PM.
For 18 months now, the mainstream media have barracked for The Mad Monk like rabid Collingwood supporters, have given him free rein to perpetuate his toxic drivel at every moment and have never once taken him to task nor challenged him to – not only provide the proof about the things he has been saying that has scared the living daylights out of the electorate – but to explain to the people how his climate change policy will stack up — and how all his blood oaths will affect the budget bottom line.
And this is not the only thing he has lied to the people about. I don’t have enough space to go into everything else, but the refugee issue alone is a whole new topic on its own!
The Abbott has very cleverly manipulated the debate by worming his way into the minds of the people, infecting them like a terminal disease with his noxious mendacity about how the world as we know will end come July 1.
When the world doesn’t collapse on July 1, we will be owed an apology, but don’t expect that from The Monk — he will just seamlessly move on to a new scare campaign.
You mark my words.
Why would people trust, or vote for a man with a smirk worse than Peter Costello’s, who just loves being seen in his itsy-bitsy teeny weenie red speedos and once trained for the priesthood? I mean, there really is something intrinsically sick about that…

Wake up! A scathing analysis of Abbott, his lies and his harmful "policy" plans… http://t.co/1bqQhMvN #auspol #mediafail #TheirABC
Scary thing about Tony, his fanatical self-righteousness notwithstanding, is his economic & scientific… http://t.co/HN0uczms
Trouble is Denise, Gillard and the gutless ALP tell the same lies.
Good article Denise, and you are absolutely right, it appears as though the people that believe Abbot, Pyne, Hockey and co are all so scared of their own shadows that are incapable of thinking for themselves.
An interesting poll released last night on the ABC found that the people who are lacking confidence are the LNP voters, while the ALP voters ARE confident about the future.
MaryllynS, please give some facts to backup your argument “gutless ALP tell the same lies”.
They claim asylum seekers come here illegally, they claim Assange is guilty, they jail children in the name of border security and pretend it is legal.
They are just the same as the other lot of losers.
Gillard does not uphold the rule of law or stop the racism anymore than Abbott does.
Denise – I heard Keating called Abbott a “pre-Copernican obscurantist”…
Anyone who believes that politicians don’t lie is naive, it is a prerequisite for the job, you should have qualified “tell some of the same lies”, and that still arguable.
Abbot lies about pretty much everything, and there is much more chance of the sky falling in if he is PM.
Some good videos there Densie.
Plenty more videos exposing the Mad Monk’s lies and spin.

You ask, Denise, “why do gullible people believe him?”. Because they are gullible dumb sheep. We know that politicians lie.
John Mearsheimer states in his concise and informative book “Why Leaders Lie”:
“Lying is obviously a form of deception, but not all deception is lying. There are two kinds of deception: concealment and spinning. Unlike lying, neither involves making a false statement or telling a story with a false bottom line. Concealment and spinning, however, are not the same as telling the truth…..Politics is an especially fertile breeding ground for spinning and concealment.”
For those who are not gullible, and that is much less than 50% of the people if we believe the polls, Tony Abbott lies, deceives, conceals and spins.
Paul Keating was right when he said this week: “If the public takes him [Abbott] they will get a large kick in the bum and they will deserve it.”
There is an article in todays Courier Mail by Dennis Atkins where he moans about Tony Abbott staging media stunts where Abbott walks off rather than take any proper questions from journalists. Here is a thought, don’t give Tony Abbott any coverage of his stunts. Don’t use the press releases as “news articles”. Instead do the job of journalism and investigate and analyse and reveal Abbott’s “policies”. Seems a simple solution but it does not suit the editorial positions of Atkins employer even if Atkins in his article suggests he is worried about Abbott as an alternative PM.
Most of the people that believe what Abbott says, including many of my friends, are avid “Daily Sillygraph” readers, and tune in daily to the shock-jocks and the TV after-news current affairs rubbish.
I don’t actually think that they are too lazy to research the facts, it’s just that they honestly believe that the above sources provide all the information needed for them to make an informed decision.
I remember when we were having a discussion at work about the pros & cons of Howard’s Workchoices. One of the above said quite sincerely, “I don’t know why you are all confused about it – All the facts you need are clearly laid out in this morning’s Daily Telegraph!”
The only way I think you will overcome this is for the MSM to show some integrity in their reporting. ( I won’t hold my breath. )
Hmmm
A lot of issues here. First the polls don’t suggest that Australians believe Abbott’s lies as Denise Allen seems to think. What they do suggest is that Abbott is as detested as Gillard albeit for different reasons. Although some of our current political revulsion can be attributed to the electorate’s lack of political maturity as various commentators (Laura Tingle for example) have recently suggested, the Australian body politic is in an appalling state.
Firstly the public perception is that we have a bumbling, apparently barely competent government unable to clearly say what it stands for and with a poor record of delivery on big-ticket items like the mining tax and asylum seekers. This government represents a party characterized by Kafkaesque internal mechanisms, disgraceful corruption of the democratic processes, vicious factional rivalries and nosediving membership. This party is tied to, and derives much of its funding from a broken Trade Union movement that represents around 20% (?) of the Australian workforce but wields 50% of the power within the Party. If the government gave the appearance of competence many people would forget the internal problems of the ALP and the Union movement but it doesn’t so they don’t. It doesn’t matter that this government contains many likeable, competent ministers and back benchers and is responsible for many good initiatives. Having apparently long since decided that Prime Ministers are the equivalent of Presidents the Gillard Government is cast in the public image of the PM so this government is apparently doomed and many good people and ideas will go down with the ship.
Secondly the public sees that we have an utterly appalling, talentless and nasty opposition for whom political power is an end in itself. The Opposition which has long since purged itself of Liberals of the Menzies ilk – lazy and unimaginative but not inhumane – sees the ruinous tactics of the US Republican Party as its golden road to (in)glorious victory at the next election. People don’t believe Abbott as Denise Allen seems to think. They don’t like him or the bunch of talentless, self-absorbed coldly calculating cronies he has gathered around him –Abetz, Brandis, Pyne, the disgusting Mirabella and the revolting Scott Morrison.
The electorate neither believe nor like Abbott and his team. The Queenslanders and West Australians who will probably swing the next election are simply determined not to re-elect Labor and hope that the alternative will not turn out to be as bad as it looks. They will be disappointed.
Abbott and his team have well learned the lesson that Labor’s Graeme Richardson taught years ago: The doctrine of ‘Whatever it takes’. Say anything. Promise anything. Whatever it takes to achieve power. Once that is achieved do whatever you like in the knowledge that it won’t last long. History and the current example of the Victorian Baillieu government suggest that this will consist solely of maximizing the power and profit of the forces that bankrolled them into power.
MarylinS is correct on some things. Labor distort on many matters but it’s a symptom of how they have been painted into a corner- by the media and by the non-questioning allegiance to the USA (Assange etc).
However this Labor government have been a very effective lot and been able to pass some good bills. But the business of government is now lost with the media’s 5 minute attention span. What else could explain the absolute overkill on the Thomson affair with nary a word heard these days..and it was all less than a month ago?.
I’m not sure the vast public care anything about the matters dished up by the press and as the sales of newspapers are minute in a country of 22 million I reckon I’m correct.
However the endless drum beat that ‘Gillard must go’ may very well work. Abbott- who I find is intensely disliked and even more so amongst Coalition voting women, may sleep walk into power.
Keating is so right when he says voters will get the kick up the bum they deserve as they are in NSW having given O’Farrell his whopping seat majority which probably gives him 8 years to do as much damage as possible.
The sad fact is Australians are an insular and selfish lot and vote when their precious self interest is threatened as in Howard’s Work Choices.
There are a few simple answers to this thing and the basis of it is Honesty.
My Point is that Abbott and the Liberal party will do and say anything to get into power.
I have also realised that if you actually “do” something you are going to make mistakes. Show me a person doing things who has never made a mistake.
The people who are in a “power” situation here are the people who are not doing anything.
Everything this Government does is critisized relentlessly by Abbott and the Press.
The Prime Minister is critisized by the Press relentlessly.
Are this Government incompetent? I don’t think so. In the cold light of day and without a News limited opinion or a conservative lie in sight I think you could actually say they are doing a pretty good job.
We are about the only country in the world who haven’t gone into recession. Britain had two since 2008. Our Banks haven’t collapsed because the government supported them.
Sure we spent a bit of money, but its only a small percentage of GDP and can be easily paid back.
Why do people hate Julia Gillard? I have no idea. Its a bit like why do people hate Collingwood. Just because they can.
So if you look at all of the Political spin and innuendo in the papers and particularly opinion most of it is just hysteria.
The reason that people believe Abbott is becasuse he has told them that these Labor policies will hurt everyone. So its a personal bottom line issue.
If the public woke up they would actually be disgusted by Tony Abbott and his lies.
There is however one fundamental truth in Politics and that is that the whole existance of the Labor party is to provide a fair society for everybody and the whole existance of the present Liberal parety is to get Power for Abbott and to advantage a few very wealthy people to strip mine Australia for their own greedty ends.
When the time comes we will all die. Whether you die as a fulfilled person under a Labor style government or a Greedy Liberal one is the point.
Finally, if you crave wealth and posessions and Covet them. When you die, you can take nothing with you. Wealth means nothing in the scheme of things. What people remember about other people is whether they were decent or not.
Politics is about the manipulation of the masses by the allowable means of the day. Whilst you can’t make misleading statements about products for sale you can about Policies and your brand of politics.
Lets have a Political protection act to stop politicians making deceptive claims. Buckley’s chance because the politicians make te laws.
Great article… Queensland and NSW just went Liberal, human rights crimes in QLD and big job losses in NSW is all we have gotten from the Libs… But, people are sheep, they’ll follow the trend till the end and Tony will have his day…
As an addendum to my above comment I also am of the opinion that people believe Tony Abbott because the media mollycoddles him compared to Gillard. For example: in today’s SMH, Peter Hartcher has done a hatchet job on Gillard by writing a full-page criticism on her on her.
“Julia Gillard is still suffering due to her callous usurping of Kevin Rudd”
“Julia Gillard is like Lady Macbeth”
“She struck without warning”
“Gillard’s disloyalty was the emotional starting point for voters’ relationship with them”
and on and on wrote Hartcher.
My point is: Gillard may be conniving and bamboozling as are all politicians, but definitely no less than Abbott, but we will never see a one-page critique of Abbott.
Why do people believe Tony Abbott? http://t.co/G46CEmy9
Today we have Peter Hartcher’s pedestrian Hate Rant at Gillard in the SMH, and Paul Kelly’s laughable Love Letter to Abbott in The Australian. Right there you have the reason for cheering along the demise of the “legacy media”, and the privileged few in the press galery who get to invent the narrative of the day according to their own personal passions and predilictions.
I have nothing in common with Peter Hartcher, or Paul Kelly, or any of the other tiresome self-appointed media pundits. They are out of date and out of time. Why on earth should I pay to read their self-serving dross every day?
There is another reality out there, and its on the internet.
very good summary of the unfit pm it seems we’ll end up with. of course, apart from malcolm turnbull and mal washer, the entire coalition has branded themselves just as dangerously useless as their leader through their silence or clear vocal support for his hypocrasy.
This video shows him up as the cowardly hollow vessel he is:
Tony Abbott running away from tough questions!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0OWqeYU8KI&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Peter Hartcher is probably auditioning for a major role should Gina have her way.
He confidently predicted Howard would trounce Kevin Rudd in ’07.
I never read him but if he is still claiming Gillard knifed Rudd then he is dishonest. He knows a swell anybody that Labor power brokers decide who leads (as they do in the Liberals).
Australians still have a love/hate relationship with women in power. what else explains that idiot Tony Jones bringing up ‘knives in the back’ on Q&A?
Love or hate Gillard for her policies but to still bring up the way she became PM (and ignoring her election win) is bizarre.
There are lots of comparisons in the comments between Abbott and the current PM, Julia Gillard.
Perhaps in the interests of balance (and independence?) IA could invite an appropriate article in response from the other side on the promise that it would be published here?
I’d like to read a wider choice of perspectives.
Colin,
If you don’t like the “perspectives” here at IA, may I suggest you go back to the so-called “mainstream” media. Oodles of material there to gratify you, I’m sure.
As I see it IA is the place for perspectives that are ignored or marginalised by the mainstream.
…Speaking of marginalised, it should be said of Abbott:
“No ability, only liar-bility”.
Dear Colin if you want “I’d like to read a wider choice of perspectives.”
Go read the MSM & that’s ALL!! you will get, why do you want the mad monk & his team the mincing poodle, andrew robber, hockey the hysterical hippo (muck bucket incorporated) biased view everywhere.
This is the first time I have seen someone put in the concerted effort to show how things really are(lieberal propaganda published as news)& the mad monks total & complete hypocrisy.
Isn’t controlling 70% MSM biased view enough for you?
This is just the tip, go back when he was the health minister & see what his opinion of women was in respect to RU 486. In his own words.
“it does not sit well with my christian religion & my beliefs of the right to life, to give promiscuous women access to this drug as a method of controlling the results of their behavior”
Damn the right of women to choose for themselves, remember this well women, he thinks he has more right to control your body that he does!!! or what you do with it. Now would you vote for this misogynistic prick. (& yes I’m male too)
Cuppa
Now that’s a quote to remember.
definition of T Abbott aka mad monk
““No ability, only liar-bility”.
Mea culpa. It should be “definitely no more than Abbott”, not, “definitely no less than Abbott”.
Abbott is the current Australian champion in political conniving and bamboozling.
A lot of good points in this article, but it would have been much better without the name-calling – silly remarks are not necessary if the argument is sound, they only detract from it.
You’ve gotta hand it to Keating. He is the master when it comes to encapsulating any issue in a pithy phrase.Unfortunately we got what we deserved once before and it lasted eleven agonising years. We can thank the MSM for that one too.
Abbott is a slime and most people know it. The Telegraph and shock jocks are the most mistrusted medium for news by Australians. People believe Gillard and this Gov’t is terrible because journalists kep telling them it is so. The ABC is as guilty of this as anyone. I strongly disagree with Marilyn regarding Labor lies. I share her attitude on refugees and Assange, but to say they’re as bad as the other bunch is beyond the pale.
In answer to your question Denise, and this is stating the bleeding obvious; because they are bloody stupid and are unable to think for themselves!
The problem is that the media is so selective in their reporting, that he (Abbot) is never brought to account.
A classic example was last night when the ABC reported Mal Washser’s comments in regards to the boat tragedy and he said that they should all stop playing politics and the LNP should re-look at the Indonesian solution and try to find some common ground. yet when 9 reported the same comment this morning they introduced it with the statement that people are starting to question the governments policy, then showed the first few seconds of his interview where he said that “they should stop playing politics”.
I am not suggesting that Mal Washer was about to jump off of the good ship LNP Titanic, but he was at least being somewhat conciliatory.
This is not an isolated case, it happens all the time.
How can the people make an informed decision when all that they are fed is misrepresentation, half truths and downright lies?
This was a gross misrepresentation of what was said,

A great article. It’s refreshing to see some home truths at last after all the negative right wing hype and spin pushed onto the masses by commercial media which is owned and manipulated by self-interested ultra-cons. People really do have short memories.
