The ‘real Julia’ stood up for herself and for all women on Tuesday, and revealed the ‘real Tony’ for all to see, writes Deb Bennett.
THE RECENT ATTACK by Prime Minister Julia Gillard against leader of the opposition Tony Abbott has been condemned in some sections of the media as hypocritical. At first glance – framed within the context of a defence for disgraced speaker of the house – this criticism would appear valid.
The text messages sent by Peter Slipper to his adviser, James Ashby, were indeed grotesque. They were misogynist and degrading and most people reading them would probably taste a little bit of vomit in their mouths. It will be left for the courts to decide if the comments constitute sexual harassment.
So well-trained attack-dog Abbott probably thought he could regain the moral high ground when he accused the prime minister of defending a misogynist and suggesting her government should “die of shame”.
It probably seemed a good idea at the time, but invoking the words of his now-disgraced mentor, radio ‘shock-jock’ Alan Jones, proved to be a game changer.
In the most mesmerising 15 minutes seen in Federal Parliament for many years, Gillard reduced the smug and sanctimonious Abbott to little more than a shame-faced schoolyard bullyboy, squirming in his seat as the headmistress admonished him.
Gillard agreed with the general assessment of Slipper’s texts ― they were indeed offensive. She then proceeded to list a series of examples of misogynist, sexist and generally rude comments and behaviour by the opposition leader since his time in parliament.
The list seemed endless: his association with baying crowds calling her a ‘bitch’ and a ‘witch’; the catcalls across the table in question time; his comments on women spending their time ironing, choosing abortion as an ‘easy option’ and not being physiologically fit for true leadership; his feeble attempt to distance himself from Jones’ comments and failure to discipline party members who attended the Jones’ diatribe all came under the spotlight.
Gillard’s challenge to Abbott was to assess his own behaviour and hold it up to the same accountability he demanded of Slipper. If Slipper should resign, then so should he.
The texts sent by Slipper were never meant for public consumption. Ashby alleges they were a clumsy, cringe-inducing, attempt by his boss to initiate a sexual relationship. Like the taped phone messages between Prince Charles and his then-mistress Camilla Parker Bowles more than 20 years ago, they serve as a reminder to us all that what is said in moments of intimacy (or intended intimacy) can be extremely confronting, if not horrifying, in the cold light of day.
Perhaps the biggest difference between the behaviour of Slipper and Abbott is that all of the indiscretions listed by Gillard were played out publically. Gillard did not have to delve into the private communications of the opposition leader to find the offensive comments ― all are a matter of public record, all were used by Abbott as what he must have presumed were legitimate attacks.
Gillard was not defending Slipper, she was defending the right of women to be taken seriously without having to battle the oppression of misogyny, both overt and covert, that has become an accepted part of the political discourse.
It would be naïve to suggest that both sides of politics come away from this with clean hands. But if anyone doubted a woman’s ability to match it with the overtly masculine boys’ club in parliament house, those concerns were swept aside yesterday.
The ‘real Julia’ stood up for herself and for all women on Tuesday, and revealed the ‘real Tony’ for all to see.

@ABCthedrum @jonaholmesMW Another 'hard-headed' (ie patronising) Aussie journalist, clueless on @Gillard Here's help

“not being physiologically fit for true leadership”
Which means that Tony Abbott believes that the aspirations of half the population are not as valid as those of his own half. That should disqualify him from the Prime Ministership.
Women from the Liberal side must engage honestly with the coherent argument that Gillard put in her speech. She presented a convincing rap sheet to show that Abbott is, indeed, a sexist bully.
So far, all I’ve heard from Liberal Party women is spin and weasel words. Even Amanda Vanstone failed. She should show the gumption that she loves people to see in her. Ms Vanstone doesn’t have to keep tight with the party anymore. What is stopping her?
Over three years waiting and we finally saw the ‘real’ Julia Gillard, or as I prefer, the ‘old’ Julia Gillard; that insightful, intelligent and relentless parliamentarian who was the only one even remotely close the acerbic (and hilarious) tongue of the great Paul Keating while in question time. Now THAT was television!
We all know though that despite the obvious and (for self preservation reasons) necessary rebukes from the female LNP’ers, that deep down they were all cheering madly for the PM while she blasted Tony Abbott for something which, no doubt, they all would have been subjected to coming up in the that ‘old boys club’ which is politics, and probably by the very person leading them at the moment. Well, all of them except, judging by past comments, Sophie Mirabella.
Just desserts? I think so!
Now if only Julia can do this again and again and again. May shut up some of the creeps in the LNP and News Corp.
So how do you silly girls feel about fellow women being sent into deliberate penury to save money on the budget while other women are jailed permanently without charge or crime and still other women face being exiled to the hell hole on Nauru just so Gillard can live up to her promise of defying all human rights standards for refugees?
She is going to spend $5 billion over 4 years to persecute the latter and save $700 million over 4 years to persecute and impoverish the former.
ARe you so precious about descriptions of your genitals that this sort of behaviour by a famale PM, a female AG, a female minister for health, a female minister for social security and all other females but the Greens who voted for this vile abuse of women?
Slipper did not say anything that we can’t see in programs like Boardwalk Empire or hear any day of the week in the pub.
It is not woman hating, surely making single mums destitute is women hating and flogging off refugee women in the hope that other refugee women will stay home and die is certainly hating women.
A 14 year old girl was shot in Pakistan for daring to want an education, here that 14 year old girl would be flogged off to Manus Island to rot.
You young silly girls are hypocrites and Gillard is appalling.
That speech is the speech every woman with any substance wanted to give. To face head on all of those stupid little jibes disguised as jokes that are thrown at women constantly, whether it be about her menstruation cycle, her sex life, her body shape, her ability/inability to weep on cue………….I’d have made a deal with Satan himself to be able to deliver that speech.
Someone had to say it, more women and men should say it and may there be many more outbursts like that until everyone gets it.
MarilynS I somewhat agree with you, but this conversation is about something else. Perhaps you might consider submitting an article to IA with your views and then we all might comment?
…. women recieving single parents benefit being moved to newstart benefit when their child reaches eight years of age. That is, after the child has been schooled for three years. So, lets not be saying these women are being in any way disadvantaged. Much can change in that time. Some seem to want to make out these families are being dumped, or vilified. Or some such. Marilyn ?
MarilynS, when you use hyperbole and hysteria to state your case, people who are inclined to listen stop listening. I mostly agree with your views, but almost every time I see your name at the top of a comment (or start reading and realise it’s you) I go to the next comment. This is partly because reading them often makes me want to agree with the opposite viewpoint, which is *vehemently* not mine.
This comment was an exception as this caught my eye:
‘ARe you so precious about descriptions of your genitals’
No I’m not, and nor are most women. Why? Because most of us know that most men who read the texts and either thought:
‘Haha, said that one before!’
or
‘Haha, great description, never thought of that one before!’
I also think a large number of women probably giggled. Most of us have heard far worse, and said to our faces, not read about in a private text exchange.
By the way, I am neither young, nor, I hope, silly.
As one woman to another Marilyn S., I think most of us have had enough of your comments on this site. Why don’t you write somewhere else, but you won’t go away. I am sick reading your drivel. Join the Greens. Your comments are like a broken record. Lots of Reporters can’t take what the PM said in Parliament because for 2 years they have reported anything against her and won’t give her credit where credit is due!!!
I for one, happy that the 15 minutes in Parliament went around the
Globe and shows what an idiot abbott really is.
Cheers,
Anne
I was lucky enough to see Gillard’s spray on Tuesday and enjoyed every minute of it. I note how quickly the Libs came out to say that Abbott coincidentally used ‘that phrase’ as he had often done so before. I think it it was a deliberate ploy, but one that misfired badly as Gillard is at her best when fired up.
Anne, I don’t give a fuck whether or not you are sick of my comments as one woman to another.
I am too old to be blinded by nonsense being peddled as greatness.
If Gillard seriously cares about women she will protect all women and not just some women.
MarilynS dont use expletives on this forum, use proper English if you cant say nothing at all
@ MarilynS. I hear they are missing you over at Crikey….and don’t forget to take your well thumbed copy of ‘How to Troll Good’.
yes i agree, marilyn if you must use that language, comment elsewhere, it shows you have deep, dark sexual desires for anything liberal, quite unnerving
Why do pathetic trolls with nothing useful to say but who don’t like the message that spoils their nonsense have to keep insisting I shut up.
Swearing is not the greatest crime in the world but last night a young refugee almost killed himself in Gillards Nauru hell hole after Bowen told them no-one would have their claims assessed for about a year because there is no law on Nauru.
If you think that Gillard is so frigging wonderful why is she committing these atrocities and why don’t you address them instead of whinging about me.
Challenge Accepted.
Point 1. Labor is not alone in using this method to deal with Asylum Seekers. Apparantly you have forgotten that ‘Honest” Johnny Howard was a strong supporter of detention in off-shore lands. Apparantly you have forgotten this.
Point 2. Your hero Abbott is also banging on about utilising the ‘full suite of Howard policies’ and of ‘turning back the boats’. Ths bit about ‘…when safe to do so’, was an addition tacked on the end when it was bought to the attention of Abbott that people DIED at sea when boats were turned around. Apparantly you have forgetten this as well.
Point 3. Abbott and Co. are far from being squeaky clean when coming to the welfare of asylum seekers. Contrary to the Libs repeated LIES that they are illegal, it is NOT illegal to seek asylum. Considering the man ( term used very loosely ) is supposed to be of a Christian belief, he shows NONE of the qualities of which he preaches. You make little mention of this supposed illegality issue in your comments.
Point 4. The Greens idea of immediately raising asulum intake to 20,000 is a damn good start. Cheap, effective and HUMANE. Will Abbott consider this? Not even if his arse was on fire.
Point 5. Quote from you – ” …but last night a young refugee almost killed himself in Gillards Nauru hell hole after Bowen told them no-one would have their claims assessed for about a year because there is no law on Nauru.”
Sorry to puncture your puffed up bluster about Nauru MS, but Nauru is HOWARD’S baby, remember?
Point 6. You do no good for the issue of Asylum Seekers while you continually try to blame and link Gillard under the guise of whatever the issue of the day is. It is YOU who are cheapening this issue, not other members of this forum who criticise your language.
Point 7. Show us how great a person you really are MS. Take in an asylum seeking family.
Then, and only then will your rantings of anti-Gillard hatred will ever have credence.
How’s that? I have addressed the issues as you suggested.
Your turn.
Twas indeed a wonderfull speech by the PM. Pity the media morons and the stopossition created a myth, that the PM was protecting a misogynist, which is blatantly false. She was protecting due process, I would have thought that was very important.
As for marilyn, she really is an abusive old troll who bombards every left leaning blog with her diatribe.Like others here I skip her ranting when it appears here and elsewhere .
Marilyn S
I agree with most of the points you have made, however I think they have very little relevance to the contention of the article, which is that misogynist and sexist language has become part of the lexicon of public life and should be called for what it is. The words of Slipper, shocking as they are, were said in private and not meant to influence political decision making. The words of Abbott, although perhaps milder, are more insidious as they were spoken with an air of legitimacy.
The subtle put-down of women, whether it is in the form of name calling (silly girls), smirking or legislation (such as Abbott’s opposition to the RU482 and suggestion of faith-based counselling for women seeking an abortion) is simply a milder form of misogyny than that endured by many of the women and men fleeing patriarchal, male-dominated regimes.
I, too, am appalled at the response from both sides of government to those seeking shelter from such regimes. In fact, I work for an organisation that actively supports asylum seekers and much of the work I do involves campaigning on their behalf, both on a political and personal level. We have been one of the loudest voices lobbying the government to change its detention policy and through our agencies provide accommodation and physical and emotional support to those asylum seekers who live in the community. Through our overseas aid agencies, we lobby the government to address issues of international human rights.
Our agencies are crying out for volunteers and I would be happy to provide you with contact details should you wish to devote your time, a room in your house or material aid.

To Marilyn S…….
I and many others here are disgusted at your language to me.
I am 25 years or so older than you and I am and never will be as bitter as you, never ever. There is no excuse for you in your continual ravings. We all know what is happening around the world. Do you think the Federal Government has a Magic Wand?
MY CONCERN is for the HOMELESS in AUSTRALIA who should be looked after FIRST.
And I will endorse the words of Anne M. We have 1000,000 homeless people in this country every night. That includes women and children who do not have a roof over their heads. That includes women and kids that seek shelter in cars(if they are lucky enough to have one),women who have had relationship breakdown and are without any hope of shelter, and much as it would really get up your arse Marilyn, men who have found themselves in a terrible situation with nowhere to live.
You really are a biased old (I was going to name you cow, but I defer, every cow that I ever met had far more sense than you) abbott devotee who somehow reckons if tones is elected all will be well.
We all hope that matron is reading your rantings and will be along any minute with the appropriate medication. Deb Bennett would appear to have offered you some legitamacy, perhaps your response will fill us all with happiness.
And forgive me for this aside, when I look to the amount of comments to a particular topic and then discover that most are devoted to this nutty old sheila who trolls every blog I am somewhat disappointed because I had hoped to read some commentary that might/persuade/dissuade/confirm.
Instead I read this rolling diatribe of obsession and abuse.STFU Marilyn, you do your cause no good.
I even wonder if Marilyn is real. Sounds awfully like someone at Liberal Party Dirty Tricks department who spends the whole day scanning various websites where intelligent conversation is happening and injecting their fecal matter into it so that thoughtful opinion is highjacked and side-tracked into vitriol. Once bloggers buy into their crapology their aim is achieved. Best to recognise their method – it’s usually exposed when they begin to use name-calling and similar abusive language to invite an emotional response. Once someone buys into it their aim is achieved. Best to laugh at them. They are programmed zombies doing their Masters’ bidding, probably for a fistful of dollars.
Haha Kavik, spot on I think – that there is the actual definition of a ‘troll’ as is so frequently used these days. And my, doesn’t Marilyn do justice to that definition – relentlessly hijacking conversations to spew her utter hatred for all things Gillard, to the point where we all tend to get off topic and start lambasting her.
Shit, I’ve done it again!
