Managing editor David Donovan tells the real story of Jennifer Nash, the lady widely misreported as having called the Prime Minister “white trash” at a community cabinet meeting on Tuesday night.
It is somewhat gratifying to see the Brisbane Times online story, which initially claimed a “heckler” had called Julia Gillard “white trash” at a community cabinet meeting at Redbank Plains outside of Brisbane on Tuesday night, has been amended — with the correct quote now being reported.
[Watch a video of the forum on the Brisbane Times website.]
In fact, what Jennifer Nash, the so-called “heckler”, said was “we are not white trash” — putting an entirely different perspective on matters, as she is a low-income single mother who has been campaigning for social justice for her son Jordan for many years.
Confirming this, Jennifer made this statement to me in some distress after reading the initial reporting of the incident:
“I did not call the PM “white trash”! I said WE are not white trash!”
Her son, Jordan Nash, was the last speaker to ask a question of Julia Gillard at the meeting, standing on a chair to be finally heard (at about 5’18” in the above video link).
Jennifer is well-known to long-time Independent Australia readers, as mid-last year we did a full and thorough investigation into former school bullying victim Jordan and his mother’s fight for justice, along with their rather callous treatment at the hands of the Queensland Police, justice system and Government.
To access the three stories Independent Australia has published on Jennifer and Jordan Nash, including my two investigative articles and one written by Jordan Nash himself, click here.
Here is the start of part 1:
If your child has a disability and is suffering from bullying and harassment at school in Queensland, don’t even think about bringing a complaint to the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Commission, because the chances are you will end up humiliated, harassed, destitute, beaten up and locked up — and all by the Queensland authorities. And don’t expect any help from the Federal authorities — you won’t get any.
This, at least, is the experience of Jordan Nash and his mother, Jennifer Nash. Sadly, it appears as if he is not the only one to receive such treatment by the heavy-handed, unresponsive and unfeeling Queensland legal system. This is not the standard one would expect from a civilized democracy — as citizens, we must demand better.
The tale of Jennifer and Jordan Nash is a harrowing and somewhat distressing tale.
I know Jennifer and Jordan reasonably well and they are extremely dignified people who would not, in my judgement, yell abuse at anyone under any circumstances; they are simply determined to gain attention to their plight — and are prepared to do so in ways others may find distasteful or unseemly, but which should be every individual’s right in a true and functioning democracy. It should be noted that they have tried all the usual and official avenues, but have seemingly been roadblocked by the authorities at every turn.
This is, indeed, the seventh time they have attended one of these community cabinet meetings. At others they have allegedly been assaulted by the authorities, arrested, handcuffed, dragged away by the police and locked up — so, on balance, perhaps this was one of the better events…
In short, they feel like they have been treated like white trash and abused by a system that seems designed to oppress the powerless.
I think they have a point.
What they didn’t need after Tuesday night was to be on the end of further vilification and abuse through (even inadvertent) misreporting of this incident. In my view, the Brisbane Times should issue an apology and a correction to Jennifer Nash rather than merely adjusting their website and carrying on.
In any case, I hope you will take the time to read the story of Jennifer and Jordan Nash and consider their claims for yourself.

Bullying is shocking under any circumstances and trying to redress it is incredibly difficult, despite all calls to do so. Schools cannot fix this alone. I’ve been dealing with suicidal kids recently who are so because their parents have bullied them by making excessive demands (6 hours piano practice a day for 6 years would get to anyone). This is a whole-of-community issue, not just a political or schooling issue. I’ve been saying for years that having Abbott as bully-in-chief is setting a terrible example for kids, and our laws are totally inadequate. This will only ever be addressed when people are prepared to accept that their behaviour impacts adversely on others, and can be dangerous, but with the ‘it’s all about me and bugger everyone else’ culture that we now have, it will only get worse.
I was one who retweeted the original story when I saw it posted on Twitter, taking it at face value. I now unreservedly apologise to Jennifer and Jordan Nash for being stupid enough to believe a story in the Brisbane Times, without checking. Best wishes to you both in your campaign
The journalist Bridie Jabour has not posted a written apology for instigating, due to her incorrect and highly unprofessional inciting article, some of the most vicious comments ever directed at our PM. It was akin to the protest in Canberra in which Abbott, Mirabella, Bishop et al…proudly stood in front of vicious, cruel placards. One “commentator” Sharon…should be banned from posting on Fairfax blogs…and at the very least should post an apology to the PM…although from the vile tone of her posts, I doubt thats likely to happen.
Fairfax should take full responsibility for this.
So, a woman bullies the PM, and the MSM uses this to bully the PM, but actually, the MSM are bullying a woman who is trying to make a statement about bullying, as it allows them to pursue their initial objective – bully the PM. All the while running endless stories on the scourge of bullying.
I wonder if they can figure out a way to add any extra levels of irony to their game?
I heard he say “we are not white trash”" but there was no context.
Now you have it.
I went to report an assault in Surfers Paradise 25 years ago and the rozzers threatened to arrest me if I didn’t “f*ck off” (their words). Never been back and never want to. I imagine it will only get worse under Newman.
Good on for these 2 standing up to them.

On the ABC News on Friday- in the midst of the main stories, the broadcaster gave a sensible explanation and apology about matters they had incorrectly reported previously.
They didn’t wait until a time no-one would be watching, they did it right up front at peak viewing time.
By doing so they completely neutered any damage they may have done. It seemed such a sensible way to handle these matters.
If I ever see the by-line ‘Bridie Jabour’ again I would have to wonder as to the accuracy of anything she writes. Why does the MSM make such a hash of these things?
Dave this bullying gets back to what I have always said instead of Chaplains in all of our schools there should be Security Guards at least one in the small schools and 2 in the large schools.
It’s the only way and it will work.
Unfortunately the only means available to address this sort of pathetic excuse for journalism is to complain to the APC. Whilst I know the APC is a toothless tiger, if you make a complaint they have to act on it and at the very least get a response from the publishers. This requires someone to sit down and take the time to come up with an excuse for their actions and to try and justify their position. If enough people made enough complaints this would take up a very large amount of time for the publishers and that may have an effect on their behaviour. God knows, there is no shortage of material to complain about so give them heaps, it can be done online and only takes a few minutes………….
