Margo Kingston’s 2007 bestseller ‘Still Not Happy, John!’has been relaunched as an ebook. Here’s Margo’s illuminating new introduction, in which she also discusses her new life in new media.
It’s a funny feeling to be writing an introduction to the ebook of Still Not Happy, John!, because after so many years in retirement I’m now back doing what I love – writing for and editing a citizen journalism website.
Back then it was with the Sydney Morning Herald’s Webdiary, created in 2000 and the inspiration for my 2004 book, Not Happy, John!. The book saw Fairfax turn its back on my work, and after a gruelling struggle to save Webdiary, I retired hurt in December 2005. A community-supported Webdiary finally closed last July.
Its successor, thanks to Twitter, is Australians for Honest Politics, created in December 2012 by former Webdiarist Tony Yegles, my AFHP co-publisher.
After seven years as an internet refugee, I’m now a Twitter obsessive, and surprised I’m still up for it. For me it’s ground hog day, but with the bells and whistles of technology making the process easier and more fun. And I’ve been given an armchair ride on Twitter due to the support of many former Webdiarists who’ve since become internet writers and activists.
What brought me back was a compulsion borne of amazement that the media had let Tony Abbott get away with claiming the AWU slush fund saga was a question of character for the PM (‘Australians for Honest Politics’ is the name Tony Abbott gave his own slush fund, detailed at length in the book).
My first piece back in action – which only Independent Australia would publish – was about Tony Abbott and his slushy character question.
Only Michelle Grattan, now a fellow escapee to online new media heaven, had the class to acknowledge a collective lapse in memory in the Press Gallery. No one took up my challenge to push Abbott on his unanswered slush questions, despite their ferocious pursuit of Julia Gillard on hers.
Having put history as completely back on the record as I could thanks to The King’s Tribune and New Matilda, I was set to resume my new life until I noted with alarm the extraordinary lack of mainstream media interest in the implications of the Ashby judgement. I wrote of the resonance between the old Abbott slush story and the Ashby scandal, then howled with dismay at the lack of Ashby follow-up.
Now, damn it, I’m hooked on journalism again.
Several tweeps asked for an ebook of Still Not Happy, John!, and Penguin has kindly obliged. I feel it’s worth a read, or a re-read. Here’s why.
It embodies Webdiary’s vision of collaboration between journalist and reader, which I feel is the only way journalism can survive. Two lay Webdiarists, Jack Robertson and Harry Heidelberg (a nom de plume for David Davis), wrote chapters. I also commissioned chapters from two working journalists, Antony Loewenstein and Paddy Manning. Paddy’s chapter on the Howard Government’s attempts to muzzle NGOs via the Institute of Public Affairs is relevant today, because the IPA is now ubiquitous in newspapers and on the ABC without any acknowledgement that it is secretly funded to represent certain big business interests.

The book documents, particularly in the chapters on Abbott’s slush fund, the Iraq war (the first a government entered into without the support of the Australian people) and the extraordinary, largely unreported Howard-endorsed takeover of our Parliament by President Bush and President Hu, the efforts of citizen journalists to get the facts and tell the story the mainstream media did not tell.
This documentation of citizen journalism provides an historical context to what will be, in 2013, the first federal election significantly shaped by social media.
When I covered Pauline Hanson’s election campaign in 1998, documented in Off the Rails: The Pauline Hanson Trip, I experienced the shock of One Nation geek Scott Balson recording the media and posting comments about us. This election, citizen journalists will be active in reporting the news and reporting the media getting the news. It has already begun, and it ain’t pretty.
Two chapters describe Fairfax values (which still live on in journalists, if not in the doomed shell that is Fairfax today), and how Fairfax journos fought to protect them against attempts by the Howard government to meet the demands of Kerry Packer and Rupert Murdoch. Both political parties have played with these devils, and I strongly believe that the Abbott-Murdoch partnership will, if it triumphs at the election, destroy what is left of the fourth estate’s capacity to hold the powerful accountable to the people.
It is also useful to look back on what is now seen, apparently, as the ‘golden’ Howard years, and to remember his government’s record. And to notice that, compared to today’s Liberal Party, John Howard’s crew was benign. The moderates, seriously wounded under Howard, are now dead. The hard right has taken over, and Cory Bernardi is its talisman.

‘Why bother? Who cares?’
My reply:
‘Well, all a journo can do is put out the information, and if people don’t want to read it then at least they’ve had the opportunity!’

Me, I feel relaxed and comfortable sitting outside the system looking in. In my day, I was the first highly paid mainstream ‘blogger’, regularly on radio and TV. The nasty right, exemplified by Tim Blair, were the volunteer outsiders. Now Tim is ensconced in News Ltd, Andrew Bolt is the most-read mainstream blogger, and I’m the volunteer ignored by the MSM.
Times change. I like where I am more than where I was. Because I’m free.

Bravo Margo, you might have noticed that even with the demise of Webdiary I have never shut up as many have requested of me.
Well done Margo – and I, for one, am still waiting for for the Institute of Poppycock and Agitprop to answer the question you put to IPA’s then Executive Director, Mike Hahan, who you quoted as saying that the IPA’s supporter list would be publicly available in the near future. That was back in 2004. “Ha Ha(n)” Mike, you had us going for a while!

I laughed about the “Howard golden years” reference, thinking to myself that people could not be that dumb!
( I won’t rehash the details, since I have covered them in other posts on IA, but I and my daughter were exiled under / by the Howard govt. Ourfamily had been in Australia since the early days of Melbourne, but the Howard govt had no qualms about exiling us, or having snipers sent after us, once we were in exile.
In our case, the bastards, literally, were. shooting at us — all for the crime of knowing too much / trying to save Australian lives – so pardon my mirth over people being so blind that they see the “Howard years” as “golden years”.

One finds it astounding, that the LNP strategy, despite being way ahead in the polls would still resort to the Howardian ‘them’ from ‘us’ dog whistle. Morrison, who hates being called a racist, as he espouses his Christianity (I think that he actually ‘followth the false prophet’), backed by Abetz (who was so insulted once when references were made to some of his Nazis relatives) believe that asylum seekers need special behaviour protocols beyond the law of the land which apply to the rest of us.
Gee, my late father, who spoke with a Polish accent, and my now elderly Latvian mother, would be in serious trouble these days. I am so sick of this ugly MSM/LNP/(and increasing with each passing day, ABC) resorting to all the ugliness of a xenophobic fascist movement to effect an immediate regime change.
Just where is this country heading? Is the devil in charge? We have always had elements of xenophobia and racism, but never has this been so widely broadcast in the MSM for political gain before like it is now. I thought we grew out of the ‘white Australia’ policy, and were starting to become a leader nation in cosmopolitism. Obviously, I am wrong if the reality is as it is reflected by our MSM and the LNP.
By the way, it appears that Abbott wants tertiary education institutions to adopt online learning while simultaneously promising to DEMOLISH the speed of light NBN. As an educator myself I use online learning delivery methods blended with classroom delivery. For blended learning to be effective via a virtual classroom and moodle elearn delievery the technology needs to be reliabe both from both the teaching delivery and student receiving ends. The NBN would guarantee this, and Abbott wants to demolish it. Go figure!

The Late 19th C Melbourne Club Scene
As most people know, in the days of Queen Victoria, London was the biggest city in the British empire. What many people do not realise. is that the 2nd biggest city was Melbourne — the place was booming, flush with money, well laid out with wide streets, riding on the strength of first gold, and then agriculture.
And at the top of the Melbourne social tree, was a network of private businessmen’ or gentleman’s clubs – several of which had sporting interests, and affiiations with rowing or athletic clubs.
This was the “club scene” that domibated much of Melbourne society – and its members were in teh driving seat of the moves to see that Sydney did not become the national capital when Australia federated.
The selection of Canberra suited this group, because “the deal” was that Melbourne was to be the interim capital. The guys figured that with some judicious delaying tactics, they could keep Melbourne as the de facto capital for a century. Ming and Gough were two PMs who pushed ahead strongly with getting more of the public service out of Melbourne and into Canberra, thus putting a bit of a whole in those old Melbourne as de facto capital plans.
One of the spin-offs of Melbourne being the seat of government for so long, was that much of Australia’s intelligence community, and Australia’s military, saw Melbourne as HQ. That meant those old Melbourne clubs were where “deals were done”, promotions were decided, careers were made etc.
Long before the first world war, one of the military high flyers in that Melbourne club scene. was also prominent in the Melbourne rowing community.
His family would go on to be prominent residents of Toorak, kids all educated at private schools in Melbourne, country homes north of Macedon etc.
A few generations later, one of the family’s sons tuned out to be a raving ratbag – he had the private school education, the rowing, the arrogance, the full bit, but was in the loony bin soon after he left school.
With the family’s military and intell connections, it is no real surprise that he became part of some weird experiments going on in Victoria’s mental health service – all govt funded, all very hush hush, to see if people could be programmed to do things on cue.
The “things” varied – and went as far as rape, abduction and murder.
Thousands of kms away, I found some of the “nut case’s ” trophies, after the police had arrested and evicted him – in Perth. He had been a tenant of mine for about three and a half months – and a problem tenant for about two and a half of tose months, The police came after him for his anti-Asian, and anti-Moslem activities – he was painting graffiti on doors around the University of Western Australia area.
He was also prime suspect in a series of rapes in the bushes outside teh UWA library.
What we found after his eviction (ie his “trophies” from the girls/victims) also made him a prime suspect in the ongoing Claremont murders — the WA police soon had him under lock and key to question him, and apparently kept him locked up for over three weeks. Senior police told local residents (Nedlands / Hollywood / UWA) that they considered him so dangerous that wanted him locked up, or out of WA – ie they did not want him running loose, even for a minute.
The old Melbourne Club-Defence-Intell Agency network soon kicked into gear. The WA police were rapped over the knuckles for interfering with “the experiment”, ordered to let him go, and ordered to protect him — just as UWA campus security had done during the rapes on campus, and were still doing a decade later.
The Hungarian Holocaust
I almost rolled on the floor laughing at some of PHIL’s (Frankston Phils) references to Austraia’s former PM — if he only knew just how far the evil hand of our former govt reached, Phil (and others) would crank out reams of similar descriptions.
North Sydney, and later, the lower North Shire, became the “computer company area” in Sydney. Similarly, West Perth became Perth’s area for computer companies (and for start-up mining companies that wanted to tell people that they were “making it”.)
So, not long after the WA police were ordered to release their nutty suspect in the Claremont killings, everything seemed to check out when a small group of Perth entrepreneurs were approached by a West Perth computer company for help in getting their software into the US and European markets. )I was part of the group, and was the one with teh strongest US connections – mainly in the US aerospace industry, but also into Silicon Valley, and into the Pentagon.
And there was a huge carrot — Microsoft were involved, as ‘silent partners”, already had the code, and were commiited to buy the software as part of Windows – as soon as they got the US Dept of Justice off their backs over the (then current) Antitrust cases.
The deal was a licence to print money – we were being offered the world rights to teh security component of Microsoft Windows, the Australian Defence Dept and DSD (one of Degence’s intell agencies) would give us the security clearances (since the software was encryption software), all squared away with the NSA etc. All we had to do was a bit of leg work for a couple of years, then sit back and watch the $ roll in. And the leg wirk was not going to be that hard – it was a superb product – eg. I am anything but a sales product of the “Dirk Suave School of Marketing” (I had been told many times that I was “too honest” or “too nice” to be in sales and marketing – But, my best day with that softwre was an afternoon with a German software distributor – I sold just under AU$ one million worth of that software in one afternoon – ie the software was THAT GOOD!
And to top it all off, the product was backed by Australian federal govt departments (existing customers), the Reserve Bank, and Australia’s major banks.
Everything checked out – we (me actually, since the secirity clearances were in my name) were given the security clearances by both the Aust and US governments, and I would get the “VIP treatment” when I entered the USA – pulled out of the regular line of incoming passengers, and had our “own” gate opened for us – the guys knew who I was, and about the software samples /disks I was bringing into the USA.
Maybe many of us have moments in life when we think that all that positive thinking has paid off. all that working towards a goal, is paying dividends, That was the sort of thing that I was thinking when we were given teh rights to that software.
They say that when something seems too good to be true, then it probably isn’t.
That West Perth software company turned out to be a fake. The staff, the tech experts, the software gurus were all in a sense “fake” – they were real software guys, top of the range encryption software gurus cranking out code for Microsoft, but they really worked for a Gold Coast based software company, jointly owned by teh Qld govt, one of Australia’s bing banks, and a bunch of Mazis — not would be Nazis, or neo-Nazis, but genuines ex Hitler Youth members who were still true believers in “the cause”,. They were based in Canada, and had business interests that stretched across South America, through the Las Vegas casinos and Chicago (ie they were in partnership with the mafia), and through Europe and Asia. Every time you use an ATM in Australia, youpay these guys a % or royalty on teh transaction.
The whole thing had been a ploy to get me out of Australia after I had stumbled onto the “mad scientist / mad psychiatrist” experiments on rapists and murderers — the carrot was the Microsft squillions, the stick was the WA police showing up at the door and telling me that I had to get out of the country – because if I didn’t I would be arrested, and gaoled – that it was aq done deal, and that the crooked judge had already been paid off — all because I had found the murder evidence.
Defence had been brought in via that old Melbourne cub, Melbourne Rowing network. From Defence it was almost an “in-house” call to arrange the software offer, NAZI ownership and all.
and that West Perth “local” (ie Perth) software company) — it turned out to be Hungarian owned. I was the victim of a partnership forged during the Hungarian holocaust — the sons and grandsons of the guys who eliminated a million people in a few weeks, were still in business together, more than 50 years later, and 15,000 kms away from Budapest.
And with all the Defence connections, the security clearances, the background checks etc, there is NO WAY that the Howard govt did not know what was going on — as you will see when I post the links, the Howard govt arranged for us to be kept “under wraps” after we were exiled, approached me after Sept 11th to ask me “in the national interest” (read that as in their interest to win the 2001 election) not to expose how much warning Australia had about the attack.
And as you will see in those other posts, Defence staff would soon (1998) tip me off about treason in Canberra – and deeper into the reading, the “intell failures” over Bali, became part of the story of my dealings with Defence, the AFp AND “HONEST JOHN’S” GOVERNMENT.
One of the spin-offs of being “on the run”, is that you meet people whom you would otherwise never have encountered. Sometimes those experiences (and the people) can be pretty bad, but sometimes, for us anyway, there were some amazing people. some stunning synchronicity inters[ersed with teh shootings, home invasions and other horros wished upon us by “Honest John’s” regime. (cf the Israeli diplomat booted out of Canberra in late 2004 for learning enough about the shootings to be able to blackmail people in Canberra – the “cover story” was that he was purtting the hard word on too many women working in key positions in Canberra / Defence.
In my “wanderings” I encountered another group of political and religious refugees – they had been “in hiding” or living under the radar for about 1400 years. I had a short few weeks with their ancient documents before a bikie gang was (again) sent after us, and we had to move again. The story of those documents bobs up in some of my posts – spread about between the Defence/murder/treason/software stories.
The Liberals, along their lackeys and phalanx of partisan boosters with media megaphones, often use the slogan “Worst government in history” to ‘describe’ Labor.
It’s a lie, of course.
The worst government – for scandals, resignations, Ministerial sackings, incompetence – was the Howard government.
On the tenth anniversary of the election of Howard, then-Senator John Faulkner made a speech in which he recounted some of the long litany of Howard government stuff-ups.

I note Faulkner saying the following: “They turned a blind eye to our single-desk wheat exporter, who practically became the banker of the Baath Party in Iraq. They turned a blind eye. Who knows where that money ended up? Who knows what it paid for? What we do know is that under the government’s own terrorist legislation, if someone acts recklessly and funds turn up in the hands of terrorists, the guilty party is subject to life imprisonment. You go to jail and they throw away the keys if you recklessly engage in an action under our terrorism laws where financial resources end up in the hands of a terrorist. Let us see what happens in relation to the Howard government, which has acted as Saddam Hussein’s banker”.
I remember Rudd unceasingly making speeches in Parliament about the AWB Scandal while Shadow Foreign Minister. The scream radio hate jocks tried to dismiss his message whle vilifying Haneef. So, what the hell happened about prosecuting these bastards when Labor took the reigns of Government? Absolutely nothing, and as a consequence the bastards, courtesy of the MSM/ABC and police, will come waltzing back in and giving us more of the same, and then some – with a spiteful vengeance. Talk about an opportunity lost! Sheesh! This is the reason I will never become a member of the Labor party, and will always seek another alternative to the fascist LNP and the politically inept and fuzzy minded Greens.

A big move was made by the heights moving up to John’s term. Public housing slowly run down and demolished, dental was already under way.
John’s nothing to the background. Most of the time a prime minister wouldn’t have a clue of the full story or network of music being played behind them. The populace is supposed to concentrate on the Prime Minister or this or that minister of matters and years. No use blaming one no matter how low they go for self gain and security. The punches should have been thrown long before in different places on system entrapments that matter.Same movement and powers pulling the strings behind all. lib labour, tag team match for years on all the matters and mostly those not reported going on behind that no one gets to vote on ,no person or media reports , trails or comments on.
The high ground made big moves. A lot of it good, a lot of it high place skullduggery and opportunist a lot of it sold under humanity and justice causes- splashing the photo’s of drunken youths thru the media to terrorize the populace- dole bludgers, ‘oh look the dental health system is rundown , abysmal,we are outraged and will change it” Usual Macarthyist type tricks like a distracter starting a fight at a racetrack and ten pickpockets working a crowd. Like 1975.
Way too big a hit was put on public housing.To the delight of many today.The minimum wage IS work for the dole and especially facing 300 a week rent, maintenance , cars etc to be able to work. Justice in workers compensation abysmal and comeback on slaving and getting shafted at work. A job is near a death sentence of stress and mayhem for many. Just trying to maintain it and the tremendous pressure overlooked by the minute by the rest of the populace and media and social commentators.By the year and decade. People are dying,stress and depression and broken families is rampant.Then you have 457 visa’s and openly run rorting by money heights of it including policing by government and customs.
Convenient, manufacture your food for private jails.Health and legal system the same. The weight put into system for maximum profit and power and control. USA has had it all shoved them for decades. Because of the tops ability to take and willingness to arrange system to batter and destroy others to pay for their comfort and standing.
A lot of rainbow chasers and shadow boxers around. Nibbling at an arm or the ankles of the corruption on the whole. Or just old faded trails they fixate on. The trains moved on.
I haven’t forgotten to forward info on the dismissal and my Fathers and families circumstances to IA. My life is upside down and survival a priority at present.
System benefits for heights are put in under all manner of excuse as ours aligned with US and global elite at present. It will try to be made habit.It will grow,the extents of the taking and lapse. All manner of excuse and abuse will be made to maintain it. The pressure and takings on others.Americans have had it all before till many think it’s part of life and existance. BAAAAAA.
It’s obvious that when it comes to the MSM, trying to change the system from within is not an option.
It’s not hard for me to maintain any sort of rage in these worrying times and I know I’m not alone.

I probably should try and post them in chronological order, but I might get out of sequence as I go hunting for the old links.
As I indicated in an earlier post, the whole thing snowballed for us – after I found the evidence connected to a series of occult (ie black magic) murders in Perth – murders that were sanctioned ny people in senior positions in Perth (Business, Judiciary, Government).
As I wrote earlier, I was soon drawn into contracts, software deals, and defence related stuff – all designed to entice me out of Australia. The plan (later carried out) was simplty to get me out of Australia, then chuck an arrest warrant on me to stop me getting back in.After that (also carroied out), Foreign Affairs stoppped me renewing my pAust passport.
Initially I thought I was just dealing with local corruption (crooked judges) in Perth, but my dealings with Defence soon turned into things that were more like a novel – treason, shootings, paedophilia in high places.
I struggled (still do a bit) to believe that any Australian govt could be mixed up in the stuff they were mixed up in, or willingly dealing with the sort of vermin they were in business with. Suffice to say, the Howard govt were a genuinely wicked crew.

From Armageddon to Australia – the Israeli Rugby Championships.
I didn’t cover all of the story in the posts, but a lot of it is spread across about a years worth of posting.
The exile appeared to start for us with the evidence related to the Claremont murders, but although I did not realise it until after we were kicked out of Australia, one of my jobsback in Perth (1980′s) had already exposed me to people and info the WA govt, and Canberra did not want to be made public.
That old contact probably contributed to ourbeing exiled – and later on, saved our lives – when a team of Israeli snipers were sent after us.
Some of that Israeli sniper team came from near ( a few kms away) Megiddo (Armageddon in popular speak), ie from the same kibbutz as one of my old contacts in Perth. That link saved our lives – the Israelis deliberately mmissed their shots – and two of them went to prison for disobeying orders – “Big Nappy” (as I call her – she wears a nappy for incontinence these days – after an overly enthusiastic night of butch passion in Washington), who had ordered our murders, was furious with the Israelis – so she had them gaoled.
and our honest J govt in Canberra was delighted to go along with her murder plans — because it solved a few problems for them. She had ordered those murders, not for political reasons, but out of spite = spite because her crew of butch paedophiles had not been able to get their hands on a beautiful little (then – ie when they went after her) 8 year old Perth girl.
Their attitude was “If we can’t have her, then no-one will – shoot her!”
A bunch of Israeli hit-men refused to have a bar of it, but no such principles held back our Libs in Canberra – they signed off on Big Nappy’s murder plans.
Suffice to say that our Libs went completely feral / evil over the past couple of decades (I know plenty of IA posters think they always were completely evil, but “whatever” – I think they definitely went more evil, regardless of what level they started from.
The ALP does not come out blameless either — some of those Iran Contra / WA Inc arms shipments happened under Labor governments, and some of the payoffs at least passed through, the ALP coffers.

There are a few posts in there about what has been going on in NZ — a similar tale to the Jimmy So-Vile shocker in Britain, except that in NZ, the paedophile rings are run and organised (or they were in the “Hulun: days, by “wumun” (I use the term loosely) for the benefit of themselves and their cover marriage husbands.

(The banks were very much part of the software fraud / treason that I unearthed – ie our big banks have Australian blood on their hands, just as the previous Howard govt does.)

I was a professional lifeguard at Bondi, with over 200 rescues, and no drownings while I worked there. I represented Australia overseas. I worked on (low level only) computer projects that were run under NASA, in Sydney University’s School of Physics, and (a bit higher up the scale) for the US Dept of Health at Murdoch University. I did several years of work on Youth Organisations, education and youth work — all around Australia, Hong Kong and the Philipinnes. I had plenty of years in the Australian computer industry, was a paid up member of several professional bodies, lectured postgrad courses at several universities, as well as teaching undergrad uni and TAFE courses. I speak a few (not that well) Asian languages and did some consulting / advising on setting up education courses in Singapore.
Suffice to say, if they (Honest John’s govt), would go after me, then they could have gone after anyone – maybe they did – it is only thanks to IA that any of our story got any circulation.
Maybe there are others who got the same sort of treatment – or were not so fortunate when the hit-men were sent after them??

First let me congratulate on your move away from the mainstream media. I despised you and your colleagues when you were part of it. It takes balls to take on the establishment… I always believed you had them.
Yes I did report on your antics at One Nation meetings – and those archives as well as my insider’s book “Inside One Nation” have never got a line of print in the mainstream media.

Soon after this I was labelled a racist and anti-Semite by The Courier-Mail’s editor Chris Mitchell who married Christine Jackman… no the marriage did not last – although Kevin Rudd is Mitchell’s children’s Godfather.
The appalling Australian Press Council looked the other way when I lodged complaints about being labelled in such a derogatory manner. It was only in early 2008 that this travesty was corrected when the council had no option but to support me and Chris Mitchell, now the editor of The Australian, was forced to publish a ruling confirming I was not racist or anti-semitic. My complaint in 2008 was in response to an article published by The Australian in October 2007 in which Mitchell claimed I was.
