The ABC has imitated its commercial rivals by its unbalanced efforts to belittle and demean the Prime Minister, says Denise Allen.
What on earth is happening to our ABC? Lately some ABC journalists are behaving more like their shock jock counterparts from Today Tonight, A Current Affair and commercial radio.
We have always prided our taxpayer-funded ABC on being fair and balanced in every aspect of their reporting. Even when performing hard hitting interviews, the journalist (e.g. Kerry O’Brien) has always, in the past, shown a certain degree of decorum — always challenging and assertive but always respectful.
But lately, the amount of smart aleck – and often downright rude – comments directed at our politicians – mainly Labor politicians – and especially the Prime Minister, have been quite beyond the pale.
On Monday night, June 11, the Prime Minister fronted a Q&A audience solo, live to air; the second time she has done so, prepared to answer every question thrown at her by both sides of the political spectrum (for some strange reason Tony Abbott has refused to go on the show despite having received six requests). The audience was made of up of Labor 30 per cent, Greens 14 per cent and Coalition 44 per cent — so it was evenly weighted with no overt bias — although, of course, the Greens do not always agree with Labor…
However, during the course of the interview, instead of focusing on policy and the many achievements of this minority Government – including 270 pieces of legislation completed and 310 through the House of reps with only two blocked – and asking the PM to explain the benefits of policy such as the National Disability Insurance Scheme, Aged Care package etc , moderator Tony Jones spent much of the time hounding and sarcastically disputing the PM about a leadership challenge that was resolved six months ago, and that is only being revived by some bored journo when it looks like the Government may be getting some traction against the negativity of Tony Abbott. By doing so, he – and other journalists who do the same – deny the PM and/or MP the airtime to sell their story.
Instead, it seemed Jones was hell bent on turning it into a sideshow with comments that showed absolutely no respect for the Prime Minister herself, nor the office she holds.
And in another recent one-on-one interview with the PM, Chris Uhlmann from 7.30 was also extremely rude and bullying to the PM — so much so that it prompted former PM Paul Keating to write to the ABC in disgust at the shameful harrying Uhlmann gave her.
Fortunately, on both occasions the PM held her guard and in Jones’ case readily shot back with a quip of her own but none that was thoroughly rude like Jones shot at her.
Craig Emerson Minister for Trade recently ripped into ABC24’s Andrew Geoghegan – and rightly so – for being focused on the trivia rather than why Emerson went on the show…to discuss his recent successful trip to Asia, about the Malaysian Free Trade agreement and the world economy. Many people want to know about these things. But Geoghegan wasted a good part of the interview by insisting on harping on the negatives.
I, for one, have been very frustrated by this Government’s inability to sell their story…and they do have a very good story to tell. Unfortunately, for the most part, when they do attempt to explain their successes it is very difficult to be heard over the cacophony of bleating negativity from the Coalition that is perpetuated by a media that bays for blood every five seconds.
So what has happened for our ABC journalists to now start behaving more like shock jocks from commercial tv/radio?
Do they think they need to be rude and sarcastic in order to impress their audience? If that’s the case they have clearly lost track of who their audience is. They are not the politically ignorant who thrive on hanging on every malicious word of Alan Jones, Ray Hadley, Neil Mitchell or any of the commercial television shock jocks at Today Tonight or A Current Affair…they are the people who like to hear balanced and fair reporting with intelligent probing questions asked of our MP’s…not blatant rudeness and bullying.
Its also interesting to note that of all the media that prides itself on being fair and balanced…not one journalist from the ABC has dared to even mention any of the reporting done by Peter Wicks from IA regarding the extraordinary amount of conflicting information Wicks has been able to uncover on Jackson and Lawler. (Wicks has always provided proof.)
I have sent – twice – this information to Jon Faine of ABC Radio Melbourne. The first time I received no response. The second time I mentioned that perhaps he failed to see the first email so therefore I was sending it again — the response I got then was “Noted…Thanxs”. Still, however, it has never been raised on the occasions the Thomson issue has been discussed — not even on the Friday rap where political issues of the week are thrown open for discussion.
And even though former Chief Media adviser to Bob Hawke, and now host of ABC Insiders, (as well as former IA contributor) Barrie Cassidy is well aware of Wicks reporting — when discussing the Thomson issue with 3 guest journalists, as recently as last Sunday June 10, Wicks’ in depth reporting was never mentioned.
Is it because the media are afraid of criticizing a “whistleblower”, even if that “whistleblower” has been being shown to perhaps be somewhat unreliable and not the “perfect” whistleblower the media and the Coalition have hailed her as? Is it because they so readily jumped on her bandwagon and are now embarrassed about it?
I can understand why commercial TV and radio don’t mention it – it doesn’t suit their agenda to get Abbott to be PM – but the ABC? Of all supposedly fair and balanced media, I would have thought they would have wanted the people to know there is another side to this story, but no — not a word.
It has got to the point where I, and many people I know, are switching off 7.30 and Lateline because they have become predictable with their rudeness and pessimism. Abbott’s negativity and want to mislead and confuse the public seems to have rubbed of on our ABC.
I just wonder if it has anything to do with the fact the managing director of the ABC is Mark Scott – a former Liberal Party adviser and chief of staff to a Liberal Minister in the NSW Greiner Government? Maybe, maybe not — but one has to wonder.

What has happened to our fair and balanced ABC, asks former Labor MP Denise Allen http://t.co/FNzFqI9T
What has happened to our ABC? http://t.co/zoMVwuMc I wonder if @abcmarkscott has the will to do anything about it?
Not to mention the poor state of all the other outlets. RT @miss_shiny: What has happened to our #ABC ? http://t.co/CNRsEMt3
Wow. The right (http://t.co/AlIbWMFj) and the left (http://t.co/wuR0tt9F) both complaining about ABC bias, at the same time.
Having been regularly accused of favouring non-conservative politics during the Howard years and perhaps ABC concern that it may face large cuts under a future coalition government may be behind some of the perceived bias to them? The “tone” of the organisation is surely also influenced by top level influence- as it no doubt is in the for-profit media. I think the coalition would also love to either privatise the ABC or reduce it’s independence by introducing advertising.
Can’t agree more. The alternative media is bubbling with commentary on Wicks’ disclosures. Jackson has been belaboured in court by a federal court judge for inappropriately trying to contaminate the objectivity of proceedings. Her applications in that forum, meant to find a solution that will benefit HSU members, have been shamelessly egocentric and self serving. As recently as last night she criticized the manner in which union elections are funded when she herself took and used for election purposes money provided to her by Michael Williamson whom she accuses of corruption. Such hypocrisy deserves media scrutiny. That there appears to be protective force field around her is a story in itself. Not surprisingly speculation in the alternative media is starting to focus on the influence of conservative and establishment interests. What’s going on?
The Q&A format is dominated and manipulated by Tony Jones. Austensibly the programme is promoted for audience participation and generally there are a sufficient number of informed questions asked, however, last Mondays programme was switched to the K.Rudd challenge issue by Tony Jones, not the audience, and ultimatelly on to knitting and the risk posed by Julia and the possibility of being stabbed in the back. Subtlety is not part of the interviewing technique of Allan or Tony Jones.
Julia’s classic retort to Jones on the ‘stabbing’ tilt “why, Tony is your job under threat?”, was succinct and decisive.

Q&A was a disappointment for the format of the program. TOO many of the questions asked and “talked over” by Tony Jones were on subjects well and truly dealt with before. It would be useful if all questions submitted to the program were listed, then the viewers could judge if the questions chosen were the majority held by the audience. If not then forget “live ” questioning have the questions vetted for balance.
Tony Jones was extremely petty and should be ashamed of himself for the comment on knitting needles in the back. He should start next weeks program with an apology for his lack of professionalism as a tv presenter/journalist.
Tony Jones bitchy comments to Julia Gillard were beneath his status as a host.
Sadly the ABC seems desperate to get into the gutter with the commercial stations and this is demonstrated by news broadcasts which are clones of the commercials.
Denise Allen is right to point out how they are failing their audience- a huge sector of Australians who find the vacuousness of commercial TV a turn-off. 3 generations of my family have treated ABC TV and radio as the first place to turn to to for in-depth news on VIP subjects like government policy and whether it is good or bad. Something like the National Disability Insur. Scheme which involves billions of dollars of taxpayer’s money and far reaching changes but the ABC, like the others, seems to pause and interrupt it’s endless dialogue on Thomson & bordellos etc. for a brief mention of it, before returning to the main topic-which is probably talking points from a political party press release.
Barrie Cassidy is no better: plenty of waffle on “why can’t the government sell it’s message ” but nothing about what the bloody message is.
Howard started this descent to the gutters but why ABC journalists didn’t stand up to these two bit bullying politicians who will always vanish, is the mystery.
Well said Denise, I couldn’t agree with you more. The format that the ABC is using now along with using interviewers who are so far to the right with their commentaries etc have really reached a low point, actually its been there for some time now. The loss of Kerry O’Brien from the 7.30 report was the last straw for me. The powers that be put him into a nothing program – I suppose he probably objected to the direction he felt he was being asked to take.
I used to watch the ABC all of the time because of its fair reporting, but it just isn’t there any more.
The reporting done for IA by its journalists are a breath of fresh air. How the heck do we get this sort of reporting back into the mainstream media?
I think that it may be up to those of us that use facebook and the like to try and keep sharing information around with others and try to activate more discussions regarding really important issues, especially the ones that MSM just aren’t dealing with. We just need to be courageous enough to do it.
The ABC should have their funding revoked and the Govt call for international tenders for a new national station for the Nation designed for a fair and balanced programing.
Tony Jones is the ignorant asshole towards a woman and a PM i have ever seen in my life and if I ever see this piece of dirt in the Street I will tell it to him right to his face.
Cassidy, Ackerman, Alberici, Landers, Bevan, Curtis are the worst hosts filled with pure bias i have ever seen and there are more on the ABC including radio Bedford is a prime example.
They all craft hatred for a wonderful Govt and A lovely smart Prime Minister Julia Gillard i don’t know how Tim holds back from these people .
Because if i were him they get the biggest slap in the face they have ever got in their lives.
Not one of them has ever had praise for our PM without bringing shit into it.
The truth hurts and get these people the hell out of our faces.
They are all threatened by an intelligent, caring, hardworking, ethical woman who also happens to share some of the same visionary beliefs as our living Treasure, Gough Whitlam. They all need to grow up or go and work with KJ.
Only blind Freddy would not have noticed the metamorphosis that has befallen the ABC. Once the station for balance and fairness its journalists have morphed into a rude and crude cadre lacking in respect and fainesse.
It’s almost as though a concerted campaign has been launched to disparage Labor’s achievements. The ABC can no longer claim to be the least bit fair or impartial.
The UK Leveson inquiry has been riveting in its exposure of the vulnerability of respective UK Governments to the Murdoch’s manipulation, blackmail and bribery and the manner in which respected politicians have cowered before him.
It is daft therefore to think that our Australian media and politicians have been spared the reach of Murdoch’s hydra and it influences.
Despite Tony Jones, the PM Gillard was most impressive on Q and A. The Liberal Party could field no one as impressive hence Tony Abbot ‘no show’. Abbott can heckle from the background or revert to his pit bull profile, unable to offer concrete or constructive alternatives.
The manner in which the PM held her ground even with the LGBT group and the claim to equal rights to marriage makes one proud. One can disagree with their desires without being held to ransom.
I’m sure they have been sent information regarding Wicks’ investigations, but I would have thought Media Watch may still be a somewhat unbiased avenue. Indeed on the message board people have already commented about the IA series. It’ll be interesting to see if Jonathan takes on this story.
Absolutely agree with whole article. I have also recently been disappointed at the lowering in standard of the ABC 24 show Capital Hill. Lindal Curtis usually does a good job and when the show started it was a good analysis of policy issues. Unfortunately it is now tending more towards the Sky News style of Labor and Liberal politician just spruking party lines at each other without proper analysis of policy.
Hi Denise,
I think you have it the wrong way around. The ABC is extremely left boased. Just look at the tweets on Q&A versus what were displayed on screen. I feel someone close to the PM was controlling that, and the questions were all pre-scripted, so she could prepare answers.
Our once great ABC has been taken over by a Howard appointed Board who have destroyed the former balanced and investigative reporting that our National Broadcaster was valued highly for. I agree with this article that the disrespect shown by ABC journalists of late is deeply disappointing and concerning and as a viewer who always chooses the ABC over commercial television this is a real tragedy. I find myself thinking that a good book or other independent not for profit media reports will be my only option from here on. Come on ABC – take a good look at what you have become. We are disgusted by the arrogance being shown by journalists at the ABC towards those that they are interviewing and us the abused viewers. It is as bad at the shock jocks found on commercial stations.
I don’t think Gillard is either decent nor ethical but nor are our media.
The 4 Corners program about so-called people smuggling in Australia has already had terrible consequences for one young man who simply collected some money to save his brother who he had not heard from in 6 years and who claims he was bulled by Sarah Ferugsons creepy vengeful spy.
http://www.theage.com.au/opinion/political-news/refugee-accuses-abc-of-denial-of-justice-20120612-208b0.html
Ferguson and Spencer stick by their yarn but unlike Natalie O’Brien they presented no evidence of any kind.
http://sievx.com/articles/psdp/2012/20120603NatalieOBrien.html
In the first story Ferguson put lives at risk, she had one man who was not a smuggler but a victim of Australia demonised and jailed – one should never believe the vengeful who dob to get a better deal and then become all self-righteous.
And don’t forget that diminutive nutcase that the Coalition brought in to begin the downward spiral.
Actually we have to thank Kerry Packer for nipping in the bud the privatization of the ABC as he knew it would be a disaster for his profits.
It is no co-incidence that James Packer attempted to crucify the BBC 2 years ago..just think how Murdoch if he hadn’t been caught out so badly would have destroyed any government funded network. His ghastly Fox News has already convinced a significant number of Yanks that the PBS is a commie hangout.
I have complained several times
I have complained several times about Chris Uhlman’s attitude and received a seemingly stock reply which advised that the approach taken by journalists was to put the countervailing view, even though the ABC acknowledged that view
Sorry!
Viewers found that confronting. Essentially this means that the ABC is putting Tony Abbott’s case for him so he doesn’t need to turn up. At the same time Abbott gets to make completely outlandish claims without similar contradiction. Tonight it was something about a PM who was floundering. This after last week’s extraordinary figures and on the day that Australia’s three star rating was reconfirmed. This stuff couldn’t be happening without some kind of direction from Management or Program Directors. There must be someone on the inside who can inform us . . .
Read and weep, poor fellow my country. A very good piece on "What has happened to our ABC?"

ABC bias – EVERYONE is seeing it, its not just me. http://t.co/pd0SNVCt #TheirABC @miamiaman
just watched the drum, and a right wing hack, pushing the LNP argument that the great numbers recently released, are not really that great and we should be doing better. They then went on to discuss KJ’s appearance at the HR Nicholls Society (to their credit two of the three guests thought it was pretty ordinary, while the right wing hack defended it), they then went on to discuss how bad it was that the Chamberlains suffered trial by media and had to fight for thirty two years for justice. To my disbelief they then went on to roundly condemn Trial by media.
I found the whole discussion tainted by the fact that the drum and the ABC generally have and continue to perpetuate the MSM trial by media of the government and CT, while completely ignoring or misrepresenting the facts.
For the record I agree with what they said about the Chamberlains case, but could not believe the level of hypocrisy displayed by the host and the right wing hack in particular.
What has happened to our ABC indeed?
Well said Steve. i used to watch The Drum regularly but now couldn’t be bothered. It is no better than watching the Agenda programs on Sky. Also, I am sick and tired of seeing Peter reith’s head on every TV station spewing forth his coalition party line clap trap. He must be paying someone a lot to get himself on so many shows. The only one I haven’t seen him on is Inssiders which, at the moment I still watch. interestinh how Libs and Nats are very rarely willing to appear. Much like Abbott and Q and A.

The ABC is heavily biased to the left, my journalists who cant get a job in commercial media, so they have a chip on their shoulders
Anyone who says the ABC is biased to the left is either delusional, doesn’t watch it, or is ‘taking the mickey’.
The ABC was once the only organization the public could rely upon to be unbiased and just present the news. Now after 12 years of Howard government appointments it is showing an unusual amount of bias to the right, along with most other media organizations IA is an exception to the rule also.
In addition to the right wing “infection” to which the ABC has succumbed, you can add what appears to be a deliberate policy of “dumbing down” the quality both radio and TV programs. The attitude seems to arise from the view that the ABC needs to raise its ratings and to appeal to a wider range of viewers. “My” ABC used to be a refuge against the relentless, mindless babble of the commercial networks. Sadly, this is no longer the case.
I have been asking the Minister with responsibility for the ABC, Senator Stephen Conroy, to look into allegations of bias and imbalance. I will send him this article and the reader’s comments.
I am compiling a resource centre where concerned citizens can find details of how to complain about bias, misreporting etc on all news media at http://wp.me/p2QkUI-3
I have tried withour success to leave a comment on your site Barry Tucker(bloody wordpress) so I will leave it here instead.
Thank you so much for this fabulous resource, on a few occasions I have complained to the ABC and the response I have received has inferred that I am an idiot.I will now go directly to the relevant authority, and hopefully if enough do likewise some action may occur.
I am sorry you couldn’t comment on the resource centre site. I will look into why. Initially, it was a nightmare to post anything and get it to appear properly. May have to update. My Twitter tag is @btckr.
I have seen many comments like yours by people who say the ABC treats their complaints with contempt.
