Broadcaster Bill Deller discusses WikiLeaks, the CIA and the ALP, and why Australia won’t get a seat on the UN Security Council.
IN 1975, I was appointed as the Education Officer of the Western Australian Trades and Labour Council (we kept the “u” in Labor at that time)
I had spent a few years working for Hammersley Iron (HI) in Dampier (HI was a fully owned RioTintoZinc subsidiary, of which Queen Lizzy was the largest individual shareholder) and was a runaway from academic studies at LaTrobe Uni and the prospect of being bonded to the Victorian education department. I was, indeed, a long haired hippy type and, oh yes, and I did inhale and, worse still, I was on the road to becoming a “Commo”.
My then boss, Jim Coleman, Secretary of the WA TLC, was about to be elevated to the Industrial Relations Commission to make way for the new bright boy of the WA Labour movement. It was done as a last friendly act by the sacked Whitlam Government.
Peter Cook, who went on to become a senator and minister in Hawke and Keating’s Governments, had joined the Eureka Youth League (the Communist Party’s youth wing) in South Australia, but on advice from an elder, resigned quickly, acknowledging that it was not a good career move. In preparation for his ascension to the Secretary job, Cook took a scholarship to the Harvard Business School for Labor studies, which was funded by the CIA and attended by all the domesticated (or soon to be domesticated) Labour bureaucrats from around the world.
Cook’s complaint about the course was not that it was funded by the CIA, but that they wouldn’t allow him to bring back the daily cash allowance that the scholarship offered above the airfares, accommodation and “tuition fees”.
Why do I raise this seemingly trivial issue now the bastard is dead and had a fine “career”? Well, simply because it reveals something of the relationships that existed and still exist on a wide-scale basis between US intelligence and the Australian Labor Party.
At the same time, I would share a morning coffee with big Kim Beazley and the now disgraced former deputy premier of Western Australia, David Parker, who never made Cook’s mistake of joining the EYL, but did know how to look after bags of cash in the name of Labor. These two would discuss in minute detail the percentage difference in the polling prospects of Democrat/Republican candidates throughout the length and breadth of the land of brave and the home of the free ― such was their affection for the place.
I was generally and increasingly alarmed at the cosy relationships that existed between Labor leaders and conservative governments. Cook, to demonstrate how reasonable and responsible he was, proposed at that time to use the WA TLC’s Building Society’s funds to finance the housing required for workers at a new aluminium facility in South-West WA ― even though the mine had an expected life of about 25 years, the mortgages would be for 20 years, and the village would be useless and worthless to the owners at the end of the project.
Along with others, we were able to scupper that deal but…
At that time, a young bloke working as a host for US Intelligence transmission in California Christopher Boyce* (who also inhaled a bit) was selling secret documents to the Soviets in Mexico to supplement his income.
In his memoir, he says of 1973, that ‘…if you think what we are doing in Chile is bad, you should what we are doing in Australia’ ― and, boy, was he right.
The leadership of the ACTU in 1969 was in no small part facilitated by conversations that included the US Labor Attache (read CIA man) and at least one leading “Commo” led union, whose votes switched as a result of the conversation from Albert Monk to the about to be great leader Bob Hawke (whose mates deserve separate and detailed examination).
The time of which he speaks has many aspects; many unions and particular unionists were either on the payroll or were fellow travellers ― some of the mongrels are still alive, so we will reveal more as they go to meet their makers.
Then there is Marshal Green in the embassy, whose career path has some interesting highlights: Indonesia, 1963 to 65, where with CIA and Australian intelligence support, between 500,000 and 2.25 million Indonesians turned the river red with blood in the overthrow of President Sukarno and his now ironic alliance of Nationalists, Islamists and Communists (NASAKOM) and led to the installation of general Suharto.
Next stop Chile, where untold numbers disappeared after the installation of another great humanitarian ― remember General Pinochet?
Next stop Canberra, and who was Mr Khemlani and what was the Canberra Coup, and the role played by former Trotskyist John Kerr, who had turned many years before his appointment and have a look at who he worked for after he saw the light.
I didn’t need WikiLeaks to tell me that the CIA has had some influence over Australian politics; I am delighted, as are millions around the world, that Julian Assange has brought the secret world to the surface but these relationships are knowable if we are prepared to think read and observe.
So, despite Australian Labor’s best attempts to buy and woo African and other states, the rest of the world know all too well that Oz is the USA’s deputy or, as Mark Latham so eloquently expressed it, part of the giant conga line of suckholes.
* The Falcon and the Snowman is based on the true story of former altar boy and former Catholic seminary student Christopher Boyce, and fellow former altar boy turned drug dealer Andrew Daulton Lee, two young men from wealthy California families who sold classified government information to the Soviet Union during the mid 1970s.

More detail please before you are whisked to some dark hole for a salutary dose of torture. WHAT was the US doing in Australia in 1973? Why and to who? Who were the Australians involved? Which of Bob Hawke’s mates deserve scrutiny? A little more is required than dark allusions, unanswered questions and suggestions of guilt by association.
Setting up their market structure , free market thug health and legal base in prominence amongst other stuff and some good too. All of it hidden under bullshit defence security like it always is and still, and the media public placation and the threat of death from the CIA bogeyman. Like it always is and still. And killing my Father and putting my family through hell to get rid of the Onus of proof and Benefit of the doubt clauses of the parliament acts. I’m still in the damage’s prime. And the usual black market and opportunist stuff. Like all structures, once away and branched away from home it’s party and opportunist time and plenty of help from already practising circles of our own. Like Singapore and Malaya for public servants in other days. All the criminal corporates around them. The Joke.
That’s just grown and spread through our society and heights and system structure. Rich, elite and public servant smug thug city. It’s caused us disease and abuse on the people, the lower rungs especially. Destroyed and ended lives and futures with no comeback. The people have no place or representation in the tierage.
They’ve been here since the 2nd W war. Macarthyist thuggery extremes and opportunity and much of it against only people calling communism to protest and balance the abuse, many of them abused soldiers. Amongst the good there’s no need for a lot of the bad. Just bastardry from a power mad superior, pig greedy conga line that’s sent a lot of good Australian’s unnecessarily to early graves from hardship, mental and bill stress and got a good number of Australians at each other’s throats.
Blatant about it too. Overstuffed smug bastards. The system is stacked. Only works for some.
Once that sort of power is in the country up to conniving, it dirties hands and spreads to survive. Gold, drugs,New Guinea antiques, corporate, wheat boards, mining, commerce and environmental and social injustice abuse.
The place is alive with American psychologies to batter the people. Media is the worst at it. Holding the status quo of overstuffing, comfort and privilege above.
Nothing wrong with the system, it’s the people in it and the class opportunism that is in it amongst what has to be. And they’re very good at it.
Dear DOUG EVANS, I agree with you, I want to hear more from BILL DELLER as well!
Hopefully, we’ll have some more tantalising vignettes from Bill
soon.
I look forward to his response to you, Doug.
Dear JIM, I’ve just been reading your comment on BILL DELLER’s article, and if it is not too painful for you, can you share with us what happened to your Dad, and the circumstances ?
Dear Doug I won’t be doing all the work for you but a good start would be have a read of Falcon and Snowman, and then Phillip Agee and Victor Marchettis are names that wrote books which address the subject. William Copeland’s (founding member of CIA from ISS)reflections and the for some of the particular Oz stuff there is Diamond Jim McLellands autobiography amonst a pile of other stuff over the years.
The new bio of Gough has some details and names of CIA spivs.
almost makes you wanna vote coalition. NOT! ‘cos we can’t forget abbotts ‘president of the world’ view, wanting to give money to anglo-american polluting industries and basically republican clonism.
gives me even more respect for the greens, independants and other small parties and if they truly became popular i’d worry for their lives, such is the global old boys club.
like the new rating system, btw, have to chuckle over the singular vote so far. i like gough and his new bio is news to me (not that i read the old one), so i’m gonna try to get it and balance those thumbs.
Hi Tess,
It’s a long story to defend all and the country, mostly though of the doubt drivelled on my Father and his situation against competent bastards.
He did 2 years on the Korean front lines. Suffered serious explosions amongst the rest of the hell and made enemies of two politically powerful officers with family in high places in Australia. He stood up against abuses on others and by way of mail to Canberra. He was suffering blackouts from the explosions suffered while in service, it is recorded in his mail home. I have 200 letters of which only 50 are really valid to the situation.
His severe deprivations, post stress and medical ailments were curtly and immediately branded by the Soldiers department as being because he was a bludger, because he missed his father who died when he was in his teens, mentally deficient. which he was not, if anything it was reverse. Though an endless amount of contrary information and testimony was provided on the matter, this Government version stayed to the minute of his death in 1975 at 42 years of age.and to this day. A soldier did not have to provide evidence of his damage under the Monarch’s laws. Even though it was,it did no good. No treatment and no pensioning. But lots of abuse from when he first applied for help in 59. It is all recorded.
Even his last abusive government case doctor quit after his death- a hand up- and joined Joh’s govt to bring down the Whitlam Govt. He is on file as others of Brisbane’s heights telling specialists he was sent to in the course of treatment to misquote his symptoms. To say he had none.
Gough was in a committee in the 50′s to find ways to circumvent the constitution. The case doctor joined others that were directly involved in the matter of my father including one of the army officers from Korea who he’d had a small war with and made no shortage of reference to in his mail to Canberra. The other was in New Guinea amongst the mining,he was high ranking and high security ties to the US and Canberra.
There is too much detail to put down here on the matter and the abuses and assault inflicted and suffered by my father and his family. After another suicide attempt by my Father over the whole matter in 68,69, legal people from the UDSA approached a high court judge over my Fathers abuse and were told by the judge that my Father was being used as a test case over the matter of the onus of proof and benefit of the doubt clauses of the parliamentary acts. I still have that recorded in file. Those laws were to stop powers and forces, doctors and lawyers making sport and abuse of the people and using them for politics and monetary advantage. They were quietly taken out of law after my Father’s death at 42 yrs old in 75 by “natural causes”.
Many names, many parasites. The whole story and details and of my Fathers service and suffering and abuses at home are something else. Trying to get help on the matter and fellow Australians attitudes something else.
All this matter and copies of files etc was forwarded to John Howard, Keating, the Queen,Governor generals , Premiers ,Presidents, media etc. No action or help taken except 25 years of getting jumped all over the net and harassed through the community and media turning my life upside down. They haven’t finished yet. To this day I’ve copped it though matters have turned a little. I suspect they think the surveilance and dropping lines said in my house on me has been fruitful.
I will forward you matter and file on the subject to print if you are interested. I’ve had more than enough at 50 and dying and a life of coffee , cigarettes and alcohol and stress. I need to finish a book on my country as thanks not correction for the abuse and 50 years of hell and childhood.
Gough’s known the cat is out of the bag for some years Marilyn, should be an interesting book. Myself, on hearing the evidence of my Father’s qualities and his and families sufferings, I’m surprised Gough couldn’t find his way to help us out or through it in his younger years even if he had to drive himself up or point some of his wife’s decency and uprightousness beside us. But that is dreaming to stark reality of Australian’s situation’s concerning quality and help and usefullness of representation.
I would say I can provide information for public to reflect on many books and history to current for a better idea of what our top end is.
Dear JIM,
Thanks for posting the story — it is horrific – and an indictment of how Australia has failed to care for those who served their country.
TThe mindset within what was I think veterans Affairs (I am talking late 80′s and early 90′s) to Vietnam Vets who suffered from the after-effects of their time there was – I am quoting verbatim how the government lawyers hearing cases, summed up their attitude to ex-servicemen, when speaking in private:
“Yeah, it’s just more snouts in the trough!” ie the govt lawyers were hearing cases with a pre-conceived mindset, to the effect that anyone making a claim, or claiming they needed help, was simply attempting to rort the system.
The attitude, and biased mindset, was probably just as bad, or worse, back in your father’s time.
TESS and DOUG,
Please jab BILL with the sodium pentothol, and/or apply all leverage possible to get him to spill more info — it was a fascinating period in Australia, and the crumbs / clues are tantalizing.
Dear JIM,I feel sick in the stomach and heart reading about what has happened to your Father and you and your Family.
There have been too many documented cases of what constitutes abuse, that have been publicly exposed, that represent shameful episodes and treatment by our Government(s)upon the very people they are supposed to protect and upon whom this country relies.
I am certainly very interested in seeing your material and I wonder if you have copies of your Father’s letters.
If you check out the ‘Diggers versus the GillardGovernment’story on IA, you will see that your own Family is one of many Families so mistreated – and there is a constant theme of the authorities making people feel as if they are bludgers/malingerers.
Thank you for having the courage to write about it Jim. It exposes the abject hypocrisy, not only of successive Governments, but also of those bureaucrats and public servants who carry out this dirty work on their behalf without questionand/or compassion, and by their silence, condone it,and the ‘ official ‘ version of history in this context.
In 2003 I was part od a team that invited Major Doug Rokke to Australia for a speaking tour.
He was a retired US army major medically qualified and was sent to Iraq in 1992 to clean up damaged US army material before repatriating it to the US.
Within 2 weeks of arriving Rokke’s platoon had come down with rashes and other aliments that have led to medical discharges for all concerned.
They were dealing with the remnants of depleted uranium weaponry and and like lots of “new ailments” were not recognised as legitimate diseases.
if this sounds familiar it should because in military terms it is the same as the treatment or lack of that is common to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or the impact of Agent Orange the chemical defoliant used in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
To say nothing of the decades of denial that continues to surround the use of Asbestos – still claimed to be harmless by Canadian and Indian governments.
Millions have and will continue to suffer as a result of the denials by governments and manufacturers.
Over 1,000 tonnes of depleted Uranium weaponry was used in the 2 Gulf Wars. It covers the tips of most conventional weaponry and burns thru any steel or concrete defence at thousands of degrees and begins to instantly vaporize anything inside and stays as imperceptible dust all through electricity water and other installations all over the Iraqi landscape.
Thank goodness we are the civilised ones
The details, names concerned and vicousness of my Father’s abuse is something else Tess. I will forward you some letters and files over the next couple of weeks. I am readying a vehicle to live in at present. The abuse on people has no end and media heights and others have tried to dismiss the matter of my father’s abuse as run of the mill like it’s easier to swallow if it is known as common. I learnt the hard way of media’s ties to the top ends security, plans and the US. Recently had some exposing themselves trying to take the blame and heat off other matters for my tangles with US security. My Fathers service and treatment was anything but common but I grew up with eyes open and saw what was done to many other servicemen. While officers and connected especially, had life assured. I will let my forwarding’s to you speak for itself. And the names. I hold no hope of justice with my life gone and will make my own if it comes to that before I pass.
Dear BILL DELLER, well said and well written.
Dear JIM, please do not give up and I look forward to seeing your material.
We must refuse to capitulate to a corrupted form of Justice. It is
no substitute for the real thing.
A little on your matter Bill. Agent orange was used widespread in Australia. When it was banned they just changed the name. It has also played a big part in the extinction of Qld’s Star finch amongst knocking the rest of the populations around.DDT too probably. It has filled waterways too. Widespread, used by councils and farmers and stockpiled and used by many, bought on the cheap.
I’ve been told that only the blue form of asbestos is deadly. I know of and have met living on the road, many people dying from it. I’ve been exposed too through industry and taking jobs as an unknowing youth.Grinding and brake shoes , replacing lagging in factories etc.
There is a high incidence of people repeatedly seeking help and tests from doctors for ailment and then finding out that they have the asbestos disease ( I can’t spell it) after decades in some cases of being told they have asthma etc by the medical profession. One example is an ex fireman friend who ended up in the security industry. He sought help and tests for over two decades till he gave up and turned to a natural healer. First visit and blood test obtained from out of the system showed he had Mesotheliomia from asbestos.
Incompetence, disinterest and abuse reigns in the health industry but you have to wonder of motive with the governing and political ties of the medical profession.
Great to see Bill Deller on board on IA. More from Bill please!!!!
Yes, more please, from Bill Deller.
All very interesting thankyou. I wish I could say it surprised or shocked me. Regrettably I’m not. Suggestions of CIA involvement in Oz politics have been around for a long time given the establishment of Pine Gap back in the 80s and 90s. Funny how it rarely gets a mention in the MSM. More power to you Bill and Julian Assange. Jim, you have my sympathy.
And now that the vote has been taken Australia HAS won a seat at the Council Table. Are you swallowing your words?
