In the novel by Joseph Heller, the Catch-22 principle is directed towards Government and specifically Military bureaucracy. The catch-22 is a lose-lose or a no-win situation. One gets involved in a circular reasoning exercise with no logical or practical answer. It is a senseless situation.
On July 9 the pious Tony Abbott accused boat people of “coming through the back door” and added “I don’t think it’s a very Christian thing to come in by the back door rather than the front door”. I think it is correct to assume that Tony Abbott’s “front door” refers to some overseas official Australian government office such as an Australian embassy, but the Australian National University’s Professor William Maley is reported as saying that the Australian embassy in Kabul does not accept refugee applications and this makes it very difficult for those fleeing domestic or community violence to seek refuge in countries such as Australia.

One cartoon by Cathy Wilcox in today’s Sun Herald says it all.

And I thought John Howard was the most perfidious of politicians. Tony Abbott, who did not complete his apprenticeship, has surpassed his master and we have yet to see the shabbiest of tricks from that cloistered mind.
