A lot of people do not understand Independent Australia — managing editor David Donovan corrects the record.
It is unusual for a publication to be truly Independent — to not have a tendency towards the left nor the right, but simply to have a fervent love for the nation, without any overarching ideology, apart from an unswerving commitment to democracy; a desire for the people to decide – not the shadowy elites – about the future of our nation.
When people ask us what our political stance is, we normally say:
“We are neither left, nor right, we just believe in what is right.”
Of course, we have some core values, you can see them on our ‘About IA’ page.
To summarise, we are in favour of the underdog in their battle against entrenched power from the bossy elites — the big miners, the banks, the rich end of town, the 1 per cent that tell everyone else when to jump. We rail against their domination of our political system — and for this we have been labelled as lefties. In fact, one commentator even called us “ultra-leftist subversives” (whatever that means) and yesterday – by a particularly egregious example of the sort of corporatist bovver boy the Liberal Party is famous for – we were called “hard left”.
We are not hard left, medium left, or even soft and cuddly left. Actually, we believe that capitalism is, if matched by sensible regulation and a fair system that tempers corporate excess, the best way to distribute resources in our society and provide appropriate incentives and individual freedoms.
As for the subversive bit, well…as a campaigning journalistic enterprise, we reserve the right to be subversive. If we aren’t being subversive, you might as well read the establishment press — your worldview will be thoroughly safe from challenge there.
People think that because we write negative articles about Tony Abbott fairly frequently — we must be anti the Liberal Party. Actually, we write those articles about Tony Abbott because we feel that he, in particular, is a dangerously destructive and deceitful incompetent, who shouldn’t be allowed to run his local pub’s meat tray raffle, let alone a $1.2 trillion economy. In fact, we applaud the Liberal Party for some of their democratic traits; for example, they actually allow MPs to vote against party lines in Parliament without risking expulsion from the Party — a policy that the staunchly undemocratic Labor Party won’t allow, and would do well to adopt. It is just such a shame that the Liberals have forgotten their liberalism and decided to install as their leader a dangerous and regressive ideologue — one who may even be more appalling than his puppet-master, John Winston Howard.
Yes, we abhor Tony Abbott — and almost everything the bigoted bully believes in. But we have no particular problem with Malcolm Turnbull.
We have been called “crypto-Greens” because we are interested in preserving Australia’s natural environment — and the wellbeing of the Australian people. Yes, we don’t like the way that people with lots of money and corporate influence want Australia to be the world’s handy quarry – or nuclear waste dump – rather than the world’s innovation capital, or scientific research centre, or IT development hub. But we think of the Greens as just another sectionally interested political party. We don’t much like Australian political parties — whatever their stripe. We know they generally just seek power and influence for their support base.
It drives us spare that we Australians — an urbanised, highly educated and talented nation — have been pigeonholed now, somehow, as the world’s navvy — consigned, it seems, for the indefinite future to digging stuff out of the ground for other countries’ manufactories, or putting CSG wells deep into our backyards to potentially poison our water resources for evermore, and then perversely sending 80 per cent of the profits overseas.
We say, let’s look beyond the next election, or the next business cycle, or the next to ten or twenty or even thirty years into the real future. We want our leaders to lead — and to do some deep thinking about where the honest, sustainable, opportunities lie. We don’t want some ethically flaccid corporate lackey – like Abbott indubitably is – to mealy-mouth the words of his major campaign donors – the big bosses – that are based on nothing more than their fervent passion for ever overfilling their ultra-expandable wallets, whilst they sell our children’s futures down the river — or to the Chinese — whatever fetches more on the open market at the time.
We are Australians.
Let us all show some pride in what we can do as a nation. Let’s stop selling ourselves short. We can do much more than just play sport. We can do much, much, more than just digging. And if IA is not right about that – which we sincerly doubt – well, if we leave the stuff in the ground, it will be worth even more into the future. And so our childrens’ futures are safe, whatever happens.
Independent Australia believes in an independent Australian nation — a nation that looks to the future, and respects the past. A land of kin, of brothers and sisters, of fellows in the spirit of the earth, where all acknowledge the awesome majesty of our great land. One where we look enrich our culture and values by looking beyond our colonial heritage to the land in which we live — and so to the true spiritual owners of this land. IA asks alll Australians to become real Australians – true Indigenous Australians, each and every one of us – not to try to carry on this facile, feeble, facsimile of a distant and increasingly irrelevant European tradition — that itself is falling apart. We must go our own way and find ourselves.
And that is what Independent Australia is all about.
Not left, not right, not black, nor white — Australians all, bound to this country and bound for a better chapter in our collective history.
We love Australia, we hope you love this country too – as well as Independent Australia — we love you!

Well said.
Dear beloved Managing Editor, David Donovan, Happy Birthday to you for yesterday.
This is a heartening, noble and fine manifesto and I love it that Independent Australia is unafraid of displaying emotion and passion.
I cannot abide the constant attempts to imprison us as Left or Right, either as a journal or as individuals.
However,no proper political analysis of the Bleeder of the Opposition, Tony Abbott can be made without reference to a physical assessment.
For reasons that I am unable to explain, even unto myself, I find the man whom my brother journalist Barry Everingham describes as ‘ Captain Catholic ‘ is physically attractive and never more so than when he is wearing his budgie smugglers.
What is more, I am not alone. Just about every female I have asked, has whispered to me, that they feel the same – even though some absolutely loathed his politics.
Will you at least concede David, that in this single regard, Tony far eclipses Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, in the international political semi-naked stakes ?
Ah, so we see where is 29% approval rating comes from. No, his physical appearance in his budgie abusing briefs is, to my mind at least, enormously physically repugnant — and not statesmanlike in the slightest. Cover yourself up Tony, no-one wants to see your wiry old-guy muscles. [Shudder]
Excuse me David, how ageist can you be! You should be applauding and enouraging older men ( and women ) to be physically active and to participate in public sporting events, surely.
I think I’ve tapped into something here, is your reaction perhaps representative of the other X percent of men, who resent the fact that Abbott is clearly an Alpha male and is not ashamed or frightened of his body ?
Beautifully said DD. I have nothing against Tony Abbot in his budgie smugglers other than many times I think that is where he keeps his brains. I do worry though that he, and many other MPs, do not seem to think Australia is good enough to go it alone and cut our ties with the monarchy. Maybe this is because of his Pommy background and his seemingly un-Australian allegiances.
No, I just don’t want a potential leader of our country parading himself around in lycra – I find it unseemly, distateful and unstatesmanlike in someone of high office. Just like almost retched when I saw Ted Baillieu do the same thing. And I think the vast majority agree with me that we don’t need to see Abbott, or Ted, smuggling budgies on our nightly news. You think his body is attractive – fine – I have no problem with you or anyone holding that opinion, but I simply don’t. Tony is free to do whatever he wants, but please – could he just do it in private. I don’t want to see politicians of any shape, age or sex in their undies.
Dear Len, love that line of yours about Abbott keeping his brains in his budgie smugglers, and I see your comment that his Pommy background is perhaps propelling his relunctance to cut
ties with the Monarchy, suggests that’s where he might store the Crown Jewels as well!!!!!
Dear David, you know very well that despite our love for sports in Oz, we punch well above the weight we should be and that many of us are obese and overweight and suffer from the likes of heart disease and diabetes and the impact these have on us, both individually and as a nation.
Mind you, the public airing of the body politic seems very much a male thing, doesn’t it.
I just have a problem with seeing politicians in their undies. And I wonder how many people Tony Abbott has terrified away from going down the beach (and back towards the fridge for some comfort food eating) because of the chance they may just be confonted by Abbott’s budgie. That ain’t helping our obesity problem one little bit!
Dear David, I think we should introduce a Page 3 Pollie Pix, starting with Bob Katter.
He gets to leave his hat on.
Absolutely not going to happen on my watch.
Regardless of political views I always thought the image of Howard going for his morning power walks was a very positive image for a public leader – and I believe there was more than one journalist who struggled to keep pace.
Budgie smugglers? We can probably live without that. But – and I am not a Tony fan, preferring the MM title – I wish we could see more of our political and other leaders doing similar to him regarding physical activities. Good on him for his triathalons, endurance bike rides etc.
Dear Ken Marsh, the voice of reason at last! Spot on about Howard and it is very true that journalists and even his own minders had difficulty keeping up with him.
Putting politics aside, Howard’s power walks – even when overseas – was indeed a very positive
image. I wonder if he still does it ?
Ken,what’s an’MM title?’
I’m with you too about Abbott and his triathalons and endurance bike rides, etc – and I remember that during the days leading up to the last Federal election, he was relentless in campaigning up to the last second – and I think a lot of people respected that.
Tess – MM = mad monk
Ken Marsh – bleeding obvious innit, I’m such a Drongo.
A Republic for Australia and Dave Donovan for PRESIDENT!
Has anyone seriously ever heard a speech like that from any of our politicians? Have you ever felt more proud to be Australian?
We’re behind you all the way DD……
Subversive Sandi
DD piece on what #IA is about – originally published last year, but worth running again for newbies. http://t.co/NrpJ13TH
These labels they put upon you are a sort of intimidation. Although I am about to do it myself: in the past 20 years I have watched so-called ‘left’ parties veer right, New Labour in the UK, ALP and the US Democrats. They are being dragged that way because vested interests and big money is dragging traditional ‘right’ parties to the far right and the left moves to the middle or slightly right.
People are under attack from corporations everywhere-witness the US giving corporations equal status with political donations.
At the same time traditional media is under financial attack and lashing out at all and sundry like a giant wounded beast.
Website like IE are now what the MSM used to do.
Howard in his dorky tracksuits was an embarrassment and he was the worst PM this country has ever had.
I concur.
I think you have hit the nail cleanly on the head and thank you for your kind words about IA, which today passed 100,000 unique visitors in a calendar month for the first time.
… thanks for the suggestion, but i wont be risking my fish and chips between those grubby and tainted pages …
