In the weird world of raging royalism, it seems an Australian attorney-general cannot suggest Australia become a Republic. Senior correspondent Barry Everingham reports.
It has been sometime since I felt strong enough or, indeed, was interested enough, to peruse the personal website of Professor David Flint, the great friend of such headlines grabbing luminaries as Alan Jones and Cory Bernardi.
Strange isn’t it, most people would run a mile to avoid both but the good Professor is usually in rapture at the mention of either poisonous name. But to each his own.
I have to say, David Flint doesn’t disappoint, and his latest rave is certainly eye-grabbing in its absolute impertinence. I mean, how dare Nicola Roxon express a view shared by most Australians ― that she is looking for the right opportunity to invigorate the debate about removing the crown from the Australian constitutional system.
Flint started his dummy spit by telling a corker.
He says, and I quote:
‘ACM is not a political organization and it is unaffiliated with any party. We have never even recommended how supporters should vote in elections as other organizations have.’
He then reminds us that the position of the nation’s first law officer is of critical importance to the governance of the nation. Then, another corker ― and again I quote:
‘There is now great concern across the nation and in government circles about the performance of the incumbent, Nicola Roxon.’
I guess Alan Jones, Cory Bernardi, the Opposition’s crone in residence, Bronwyn Bishop, and the fruity-tongued member for Indi, Sophie Mirabella, amongst others, have been whispering in David’s ear.
For an organisation under Flint’s total and absolute control, and which he claims is not in any way political, he sure makes people wonder.
He is as snide as snide can be in denigrating the Attorney-General for wanting the crown removed, he reminds his readers this is the same crown to which she has more than once pledged allegiance.
Well, that’s right, and it’s a disgrace in this century that holders of public office are obliged to make such a pledge to such an irrelevant system; such an antiquated and insulting old word habit. Why successive governments haven’t take the bull by the horns and changed it staggers the mind.
Until this happens, all ministers will need to demean themselves and, in most cases, place their tongues firmly as they do.
Flint claims Roxon sees no conflict of interest in Roxon putting her opinion on the back-burner while she is A-G. He obviously doesn’t like her honesty.
He has tippy-toed through speeches she made while a member of the then Opposition and he came across a Roxon pearler that really got up his nostrils. She called on republicans to apply the blowtorch to constitutional monarchy and warned any recalcitrant Labor MP who dared have second thoughts about the republican agenda; she insisted that being a republican is a core condition of membership to the caucus.
Goodness, David, she sure has balls doesn’t she? Not like your mate Tony Abbott, a former director of Australians for Constitutional Monarchy. And for such an avowed monarchist, Tony is a bit of a dictator ― he won’t let his MP’s have a conscience vote on gay marriage.
But back to Flint and Roxon.
He seems to be outraged that she says we definitely need to sharpen our attack on the institution of monarchy pointing out what is axiomatic ― they are such an easy target.
They made themselves an easy target first when the Queen took the wrong advice to allow the TV stations to film a day in the life of the royals and, by so doing, strip away the mystique and fantasy which set them apart from their “subjects”.
It was all downhill from then on, culminating when Rupert Murdoch got hold of those Charles and Camilla tapes and we heard the prospective monarch breathlessly telling his then mistress, while he was still married to his gorgeous Diana, that all he wanted to be was her tampon. He lifted romanticism to new dizzy heights!
Nicola further outraged the good professor by saying said suspected those who developed the constitutional monarchy:
‘…would turn in their graves, I suspect, were they to see the likes of David Flint or Tony Abbott suggesting that their compromise was the final destination for democratic progress.’
Then her tongue went firmly back in cheek, and I suspect she was having a lend of David Flint when she remarked that the monarchy was not suggested as an option in Timor, Afghanistan or Iraq.
Of course, Flint swallowed it hook, line and sinker. It set the Australian representative of all things royal and ancient blowing on all cylinders ― hair pins would have been flying wild.
He bellowed: restorations were proposed in Afghanistan and Iraq (apparently, he wanted those Mickey Mouse monarchies restored) but the heirs to the toppled thrones never did get the call to come back. And, according to Flint,
‘…there were even some suggestions that East Timor become a Commonwealth Realm.’
He quotes Nicola Roxon again:
‘… imagine if instead of Xanana Gusmao, the East Timorese had to rely on Sir John Kerr, as the representative of a distant foreign monarch, to restore order.’
‘One shudders at the thought’, she rightly said.
Then, of course, Flint goes totally over the top by saying it is reasonable to conclude that Ms. Roxon is toying with changing our ancient and successful constitution by adapting it to the East Timorese model.
He goes on:
‘She clearly doesn’t like the Australian constitutional system, nor especially the Australian crown.’
Flint sure got that right and, along with Roxon. the majority of MP’s on all sides of politics would agree with her.
Of course, this weekend in Hobart, Tasmania, the Republican Movement is heading for a renascence ― more of that in my next post.
Meanwhile, I hope ACM keeps Professor Flint in his current role as keeper and chief spruiker for the continuation of a non-elected, non-Australian, non-resident, foreign head of state.
It will make the republicans’ task much easier.

Given the tenor of public discourse around sexism in Federal politics for the last few weeks, it’s disappointing to see this sort of sloppy, casual sexism here at IA. I’m sure there are far pithier ways of describing the execrable Bronwyn Bishop without resort to insults that are so clearly gender specific. That’s precisely the kind of dog-whistling sexism we have seen from the Opposition.
Classic mainstream Murdochracy, Hollywood and Alan Jones tactic.
Set up your own shaky skittle’s for a win and for the public mind to have to knock over to get your own way. Help batter and fill the airways with it to effect public opinion. In a country where near every labour politician is a classic liberal from Beattie, Beazley to Kevin Rudd.
But don’t address the matters of Republic/ Monarchy.
They have been given the biggest story of our era but have nothing to say, from all the media greats and political commentators and investigative programs and from Governor Generals to Alan Jones.
Republic by deceit to their own detriment. That’s one hell of a pushed agenda coming from where and why?
Give me a Republic any day a country that can stand on it’s 2 feet by it’s self not answering to the wims of poms and their Queen.
Freedom is what we want and deserve it’s our country not Englands USA or anybody else’s country.
Viva Le Republic of Australia now and for all time!
Green & Gold forever!
The devil’s in your detail macster. The wim’s of poms are no threat, the USA is though and the corporate and institution heights and only a Monarch can handle those things in intervention. Do you think they will on their own? And without opportunism? Or that the myth of democracy and voting will or can handle it with the manipulations of politics and system and monetary class structure we suffer?
Your words are sentimental and melancholy fluffy propaganda without due care to the people’s reality.
Further to Jerry Cornelius’ comment, irregardless of gender, name calling hurts the argument. You are better than this, IA is better than this. We deserve better than this
Jim my friend freedom of your own identity is the key not bowing down to another country that owns you or me.
Watch the movie Brave Heart and you to will be converted!
FREEDOM!
The enemies within, macster. I hold to my post.

You’re missing the bigger picture
Flint, Jonesey and Ma and Pa Howard serving high tea under the union jack at the Governor Generals residence at kirribilly government house–(after refusing Yarralumba)
–holding the tea-cup in a toasting position and praising the standards that are set by the British Royal Family for all of us plebs to follow and unquestionabally obey.
Jim -You do not appear to have much faith in your fellow Australians to form an acceptable Republic. Shame.
A president is an endorsement of the US system here. A ticket to their institution and corporate ballgame and playing field. A corporate sock puppet like the governor general’s office. Actually , all of politics.
No matter how much or what information is given, it is ignored like a ghost that doesn’t exist for conversation to return to platitudes of William Wallace, Cmon’ ozzy, Ya liddle beudy, Diggers fought for this, level playing fields and Golden wattle blowing in vesper breezes amongst the bullshite knee deep which is actually honey scented clover to the sheep and yobbo.
Look at roy’s post above. Under Howard , most of the groundwork happened but put in place by a tag team of LIB /LAB distractive bullstuff over years.
The politics, strategies and psychologies of the US are here, parties indistinguishable on any real structural matter and the US embedded.
Our kids think they are African American dawgs and homies, bro.
Things shouldv’e been happening for foundations but they haven’t and don’t. Misbalance. The country could’ve put off any dives but the lower have been ignored in US style greed and richman’s version of natural selection and predatory scale of food chain.
The future globally – systems are set to be punished, to be left out and fail if they don’t tow the line to this way’s drumbeat.
Health, legal and insurance at the fore. What happens when the heights conquer all? What do they do to their own? Who do they start eating then? Look at Australia internally and disparities to know.
Then Roy and William will know all about it. Who is actually King ,what power’s, cartels and force, and all a President is.
My fellow Australian’s let my Father be killed, left us eating sugar out the bowl and dried rolled oats, left us living in the bush and in cars. I’m 50 years old and dying from the childhood horror, assault, stress, cigarettes, coffee and alcohol.
Some pleasant and good and well meaning people around but the whole aren’t worth a pinch of shit.
Nonsense, Jim, a republic is no more an endorsement of the US system as it is an endorsement of the German, Icelandic or Irish systems. In fact, it is less, because there is no way Australia would end up with US-style executive presidency, but would have a constitutional umpire system president similar to that found in those other nations, and similar to what we have now with the Governor-General. The difference will be, we will no longer have a pointless subordinate constitutional link to our mother country and their expensive ruling family.
You talk about the golden wattle, but a Republic is all about that – a fully and truly independent Australian nation. Supporting the current system is disloyalty to this vision.
What a load of Braveheart and Lassie story Dee. The current system is a republic. Your as bad as Roy , where’s the violins with that? What about an akubra and farmer holding a child’s hand and siloheutte on a sunset for your backdrop. Throw in a blue dog at his feet.
Where’s justice for the man they killed to strip the Monarchs law? Army no 11680. Doesn’t exist, Just nonsense. Where’s the media, where’s the outrage, where’s the community, public whole that deserted him and us while Australia’s and Brisbane’s medical and legal elite killed him for your republic? Where’s the satellite dish’s, Where’s the stirring speeched outraged lawyers and doctors? Where’s the political representation? The people involved all got fat pensions and elite status, their children, in the inns of court , 3/4 million dollar wages in the health heights, inheritors of real estate and houses, pharmacy’s and businesses and wealth portfolio’s and cushioned public service careers.
This whole site is full of the woes and connected but your on this page pushing the republic agenda like the outrage of Craig’s matter. That he is slurred the same as republic is pushed by battering with deceit. The damage is done. You participate in the same manipulation of the people that Murdoch does but it’s alright when you do it. Why are all the ills and abuse of this country and deaths since the boom that are caused by rich man , corporate ethic and republicanism put down to not having a republic? US psychologies. By the rich for the rich. It’s how the Monarchy was sunk.
Craig gets polite cop’s, I get ten years of low flying F111′s cracking the roof and SAS gunships and hunted all over web and community but that’s not news. Craig and a few hundred others gets a fat pension because any excess he has indulged in is legal. The lower get death by the hundred thousand by stress in silence and written off as trailer park trash. After all these decades, will it be changed now? I guess that is because a Republic is so fine.
We’ve been a republic since Whitlam got sacked and look at these site pages. Corporate immunity. MSM. Homeless. Corruptions. Budgie boy, Alan Jones, Terra Australis. But here you are bleating for this version of a republic to be cemented. Not making it right and safeguarding before the fact. The ill force of this country wants everyone to trust it and do it after the cement.
245 dollars a week, 3 to 400 a week rent, childcare, car bills and breakdowns, living on coffee , cigarettes and stimulants and frayed nerves and black eyes instead of food and told they’re bludgers. Watch their loved ones walk out with others. That they don’t want comfort, a house, be able to afford a wife and family . The poor and broken family’d get baby bonus’s to buy sports steering wheels and mag wheels trying to buy young boyfriends for security. The top gets lotto wins every week and the lower’s comforts and security and entrapment for a wage in pay off for the collusion.
All so the health and legal can maraud and insurance heights and rich can maraud at root. Because it is also republic freedom for those heights to batter the people and country for as long as it takes under any disguise, torment, bludging and manipulating or Murdochcracy till they get their recurring control of life and way. And that means 1,000 dollar operations turned into 35,000 dollar operations and culling for the lower. Your siblings, cousins, friends asking you to mortgage your house to save their kids life. Many have done it and ended on the streets. They have no column or public outrage as epitaph for their deaths and suicides. If they are brought up the headstone says bludger, should’ve worked harder, should’ve gone to uni, that’s life, continue. They just get Presidents demanding your underlying thoughts and psych must be that this is a fine system. With the police and security intelligence ,military and system heights to enforce it for decades till it is or can be collapsed.
Can it be better for all? Of course. But a President owned by these forces will only make it harder. The ill has structured the system for itself and stacked the family tree from the top down day by day for decades to it’s benefit. Any one a threat to it is dealt to.
IA has a long and healthy future ahead of it combating ill. The troubles are structured for heights advantage in misbalance and perpetuity.
The Monarchy made the world in raw old days and ways. The corruptions and ill’s of life blamed on the Monarchy belong to this republics forces. The heights of institution and corporate and rich man.
For all the good extolled of system and modernity could have easily been given credit to the Monarchy but they stole the people’s power, bathe in the hard work of another system and take credit for all the good of the world. A Monarchy could have just as easily been sitting here today in the modern world being made better and enjoying the fruits and rejoicing of it’s toils but we get other.
A Monarchy or Republic is neither here nor there. It is the structure and quality of either that matters, not the ill powers and forces hiding in any name wanting credit and worshipping for you to indulge in it’s deceptions, excess and psychotics.
